Buying Shrimp?

Can you buy shrimp right off the dock there in town or is there another great place to purchase fresh local shrimp?

Sometimes you can get right off the boat but it is hit or miss as sometimes the boats are out on multi-day trips or have their catch promised elsewhere. Atlantic Seafood Market at the foot of Ash Street at the marina usually has a good selection of local shrimp. Also, the Publix on Sadler Road generally has fresh, never frozen Mayport shrimp.

Up until last fall, we visited the boat docks in Fernandina Beach and bought fresh-caught shrimp from a couple under a white tent. Last year, we could not find them and were told by locals that they were selling shrimp illegally and were shut down. Don't know it that's true but they were nowhere to be found.

Now, we buy our shrimp for a roadside vendor. Drive back over the bridge toward Yulee. About a mile over the bridge, as the road bends right, on the left is a produce store in a strip mall who gets his shrimp from Mayport. It is frozen but less than a couple of days. We get the largest size possible - usually 9-12 count! He did tell me that if I called ahead, he would not freeze my order but we never planned that far ahead. Apparently he makes a shrimp run up to Mayport twice a week. We de-vein them, marinate the whole, unshelled shrimp in olive oil, sea salt & hot pepper flakes for about an hour. Then grill them whole on skewers and hit with a little lime juice just before serving. Awesome!

Shrimpers have to have a license to sell their shrimp on a retail basis. The strip mall store you are referring to is Joe's Produce. He does sell the local Mayport shrimp as well as lots of fresh vegetables.
