day trip

We have two days in Miami before flying home and thought a day trip to the Keys might be fun. Perhaps for lunch. Can anyone recommend where we should go and a funky but good place for lunch. We'd rather find a "shrimp shack" than The Homestead House, if that explains our thinking.

Head on down to Islamorada to the Lor e Lei or the Islamorada Fish Company. They are some little shops right there and the huge fishing store World Wide Sportsman. Both restaurants are right on the water and have good food. Afterwards if you want to go a little further south go to Robbies and feed the tarpon right out of your hand.

Add in a stop in the Everglades on your way to the Key. From Miami, you'll pass through Florida City on the way to the Keys. From there, it's about a 15-20 min drive to the entrance to Everglades National Park. There's a nice visitor center outside the park gates. The highlight of this part of the park is a walk on the Anhinga Trail at the Royal Palm Visitor Center. It's less than 1/2 mile round trip. You'll see lots of gators, birds and other wildlife.

Islamorada and the restaurants mentioned above are a great lunch idea.

Here's the newest "to do" in the Upper Keys. Wyland has just finished a building size mural of Florida Keys ocean life. The building is in the median at mile maker 99. Pull in and take a look at this beautiful work of art. here's a link to the website.
