I've been to Keywest several times and walked Duval at all times of the day. I have never felt unsafe or threatened in any way.

Duval is very safe. There is are cops everywhere. Key West in general is a safe city. The only area I tend to avoid after dark is Bahama Village.

simkeith and I agree that going west of Duval at night is taking a chance on messing with a great vacation. There are of course exceptions, like Southard which is well lit and the Meteor and Green Parrot are there, but going towards Bahama Village and not "looking like a local" is just a risk. Petty crime, drugs and being harassed are possibilities.

My wife and I were walking to dinner in late Nov and made the mistake of inadvertently wandering around that area west of Duval on the way. We were heckled and nearly stumbled into a street fight that was developing just across the street from a very well known upscale restaurant. After dinner we encountered some of those same young men right outside the enterance to that site and made us uncomfortable enough to ask for an escort back to Duval to be sure we didn't get off course again. I'm sure the businesses in that area are concerned and will be working with local law enforcement to turn the situation around.

Duval is absolutely safe at night. We always walk to and from wherever we are staying and feel perfectly at ease.

Never a problem for us, even when our kids were little.

Hmm. Strange question. In New Orleans, "off Bourbon" is REALLY "sketchy."

But this is Key West!

It's more like how Disney...except GENUINE and for adults.

Unless you are attempting to buy something other than alcohol (!!!), or looking for a challenge, Key West is a large neighborhood of neighborhood of good neighbors.

Honestly, Duval is nearly as a mall. With your family. At Christmas. The only difference is that it's in the Caribbean and you can walk around with a drink in your hand. (And after 11 PM, the, uh, HILARITY begins.)

Yes. I walk Duval every night when I am in KW. Quite a few of those times was late at night. Duval is very well lit, and having stayed right off of it, never empty!

It is the same as any big town. Walk with a group, avoid alleys and be aware of your surroundings.
