Trip Report 2/8 - 2/17/08

I can't believe I'm writing this. We just left for KW the other day??!

We traveled with 5 newbies this year , our 5th overall to Key West. Landed in FLL late Friday eve, stayed at Residence Inn -Miami (loud, right off end of Miami Int'l AP)

Drove 2 cars down stopping 1st at Alabama Jacks, they were barely open but obliged us in serving drinks. Saw an alligator, new experience for newbies! 1st time here for us. Nice place, wish we could stay longer.

Next was on to Hog Heaven, our annual visit for a quik bite, beers too. On the road again. Got into KW around 3pm and checked in to Galleon Resort. Both units were ready with no wait!! Quickly dumped everything into units and head for the bars!

Started at the Conch Farm, and progressed around the harbor walk. Then kept migrating towards Duval. The crawl started as usual, spending much of the time at Durty Harrys, finally crashed around 1:30am whew!

Most mornings were spent with coffee and breakfast in the unit or on the deck overlooking Marina. Bought all supplies for breakfast and snacks at Waterfront Market.

Had our 1st sample of Reds at Conch Rep. ....excellent! Thanks to this forum.

Sunday eve was at Alonzo's, great waiter Garrett made the right suggestions. Again, Excellant.

Monday, Kelly's for great wings and Margaritas among the usual crawl spots too.

Tuesday we toured Mel Fisher Museum, 2nd time for us but just as good again.

Wed we sailed with a great crew for sunset cruise on the Carribean Spirit . PLENTY of ''little beers'' too.

Thursday, Friday were a bit of a blur as I was battling one of the Midwest's finest colds. Still managed to make it over to Stock Is. for the Famous Hogfish sandwich (a 1st) and HH at Hurricane Joes.

Did a 1/2 day Back Country fishing trip with ALMOST THERE CHARTERS. Caught some nice fish and still wonder what the heck we had hooked that pulled us about 200 yds thru the channel?? Thanks Jayme!

Other places we tried and enjoyed were Green Parrot, Cap'n Tonys, the new Guy Harveys,..wow what a renovation, very nice place and nice bartenders too. Just had wings and drinks here, shoud've ate a real meal that night!? Special thanks to the Marachi Band in the White Tarpon...... you had to be there!

We had a lot of 1st's on this trip. The newbies were very pleased with all to do in such a small area. Never had a complaint of a bad meal or service and tips were well over 20-25% in most settings. Carlos and Patrick will see the likes of these Iowans again.

A great stay at the Galleon, location, location, location. We missed the chance to meet up with Pirates50th but will look forward to that meeting ....... yes, maybe November??

Returned home to a blizzard, rain, freezing rain then heavy snow..6-7'' 365, 364, 363, 362,.......

Thanks for the account of your trip. Sounds like you did it right. I'll be down in April and I've been counting down as well. Stay warm, make a margarita, and find a good live webcam from Sloppy Joe's or the Hog's Breath. That's what gets me through the winters in Western New York.

Can you give a few more particulars on the HH at Hurricane Joe's?

We'll be staying on Stock Island and have never been to Hurricane Joe's.

Topics, it's a 4-5 block walk from Curry Hammock if that's where you're staying. It's a big marina with dry storage and light tackle charther boats. They have leased out spaces to kayak rentals, scooters, Harleys, a fast boat ride, mini speedboats. There is an outside bar with awnings and misters facing west so it gets hot at sunset but they do their best to shade you. Lots of locals and charter fisherman hang here. The menu downstairs at the bar downstairs is varied and quite good. Upstairs is a quieter restaurant with more $$ food It's much more fun downstairs, easy to strike up a convo with anybody. Bartenders are usually Rachel (Beautiful, makeup, chesty) or Josh (not chesty, no makeup). They also offer diving. Lots of different retail shops. Here's a pic, although the new owners painted the buildings a really ugly blue color.

Topics: I think when coach typed "HH" he was referring to "Hurricane Hole" which is what the little lagoon that Hurricane Joe's sits on is called (due to it's being a "sheltered" port just off the atlantic ocean at cow key channel).

Happy Hour had 16 oz draft beers (cooold) for 1.50 and well drinks were 2.00 or 2.50 (lost track) and great appetizers. Very friendly crowd and good entertainment by someones nice dog chasing Pelicans. Haven't eaten upstairs, just down and good clam chowder too.

For the other poster, sorry (name) Hogfish is white sweet fish similar to scallops and I think most of the time(need and expert here) they spear it instead of catching it. Very good. It was on the list at Alonzo's catch of the day for around 25.00/lb!
