Flew into Ft. Lauderdale on 3/11. Had rented a car to drive ended up getting a convertible for an extra 100.00 charge not too bad. No problem getting out of Ft.Lauderdale and into Rt. 1 to the Keys. Our first stop was in Islamorada for 3 nights at the Cheeca Lodge. When we arrived, they said they didn't have our reservation, I kind of freaked out and while they were looking called my travel agent to make sure the same thing would not happen at The Ocean Key in Key West. Ended up getting upgraded to a suite with a kitchen, living room, huge bathroom and king size bedroom. The room overlooked the Golf Course and was very nice. Had an enclosed porch.
Very nice resort, beach area ok, swimming pool very nice also the lagoon looked a little dirty to swim in. The adults only pool was a turn off as all the seats had reserved signs on them as well as the tent areas with lounge chairs. We went to sit on some lounge chairs that didn't have reserved signs on them and the person next to us said those are reserved. I asked how to you reserve these. He said that they are $70.00 for 3 hours or something like that. I don't think so, went back to the regular swimming pool and sat there.
Ate at Islamorada Beach Club, the best Key Lime Pie for sure. Uncle's Restaurant was great also. Checked out Lorolei's for drinks. Nice area but decided to eat someplace else for dinner. Also had dinner at the Island Grill a place where people with boats could pull up. That also was pretty good. Husband had breakfast every morning at Islamorada Bkg. Very good, he would bring mine back for me. With the kitchen I was able to make my own tea. Convience Store right across from the resort for Liquor, Beer, groceries, not cheap but very close.
Left for Key West Fri 3/14. Stopped at Bahia Honda to check out the beach. Very nice, but next time would go to a different section, the part we were in had limited beach space, we drove around after and saw that we would have been better off on the other side. So glad we stopped it was definitely worth it.
On to Key West. Stayed at The Ocean Key Resort for the next 4 nights. I think we also got upgraded here as we had a living room then a long hallway then the bedroom and huge bathroom with shower and whirlpool. Balcony overlooking the ocean and Mallory Square. Had lunch at the Sunset Pier, very nice. Dinner that night we went to A & B Lobster but there was someone making a big deal about not being able to eat outside because they were late for their reservations, they just went on and on we got turned off and said let's go downstairs and check that out. I think that was Alonzo's and we had a great meal there.
Checked out the Conch Train Tour that was very nice, Taz was our driver, she was really good. Had Dinner at Kelly's. It was ok, not the best but Ok, hostess seemed to be overwhelmed with seating people. Best dinner was at Duffy's Steak and Lobster House. I had the best baked stuffed shrimp there that I have ever had. It was definitely our best meal. Although we did go back to A & B Lobster on our last night and that meal was fantastic also. Went to the Conch Republic a few times for happy hour and appetizers. Definitely love the reds, the shrimp that tast like lobster. First time I ordered them the waitress screwed up and I ended up with regular shrimp which were also good, but sat at bar next time and the bartender got it right. Brekfast from Damn Good Food to Go, very good. Last Breakfast at Hot Tin Roof at hotel also good.
Ocean Key Resort was very nice no compaints other than the chair hogs who put stuff on chairs all over the pool area then leave for the day and noone can use those chairs. Resort was nice, clean, got use to the Roosters but by then it was time to leave.
Got to kind of see Kenny Chesney. Walked over to Sloppy Joes that night and he was still playing so we were able to watch from one of the outside open windows and take some pictures and definitley hear the music.
Our best place ended up being on our last night the Rum Bar and the other end of Duval we stopped after going to Hemmingway House and Southernmost Point found the Rum Bar 2 for 1 rum and coke, went in also a cigar place. Small really nice bar great people, excellent bartender and had the best time there. Hope when we go back some day that it is still there because we would definitely spend alot more time there.
All in all great trip, weather was fantastic I guess I didn't have to worry. No rain at all except first day a small shower. Thanks to all the advise On Trip Adviser Forum which told me where to go it was a good vacation. If I had not found this forum I think we probably would have picked all the wrong places to go. Wishing I were back in Key West!
