Flydrive - Orlando - Miami - Keys - Sarasota

Am after some advice please. Flying into Sanford on the 15 May, have a week booked staying at Orlando, then driving down to Miami for one night, from there driving down to the Keys, 3 nights booked at Key West, then thinking of driving to Sarasota for a couple of nights. This will be our first time to Miami and the Keys and am wondering what to expect, imagine Miami to be hectic and hoping to see as much wildlife as possible at the keys. Want to visit the Deer Nature Reserve. Any advice please re driving times from Miami to Keys, what to look out for at the Keys to enjoy and experience the nature/wildlife side. No good at swimmimg - so dry land preferable!!

WOW - Driving form Orlando to Miami then to the keys then back to Sarasota? Thats a lot of driving.

The drive from MIA to "the keys" is about an hour. This 1 hour drive will get you to the start of the keys. From the start of the keys to Key West (the end of the road) is another 3 hours.

Deer Nature Reserve is in Big Pine. Big Pine is about 45 minutes from Key West.

Barking mad I know!!!! We love driving - did a fly drive around California 3 years ago, landed at Los Angeles and worked our way round to Lake Havasu, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Las Vegas and San Francisco - absolutely loved every second of it, even the parts when we were horrendously lost!!!! Though we did have accomodation booked - going to "wing it" this time. Thanks

We've done this trip, only spent a few nights on Orlando though then did Ft Myers, Naples, Florida City (to drive down Keys & back in one day as weather wasn't that great & a hurricane wasn't too far off but in May that should be OK) and 5 nights in Miami, driving back to Sanford to catch our flight.

Have also done the California trip taking in LA, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite but that was 3 wks.

We just love touring the States, the roads & cars are great. Did New England in 2 wks, Washington & the south in 2 wks. 2 wks to tour Rt 66 followed by a week R&R in Miami.

This year will infact be the first time we have stayed in one place for the whole holiday since 1992!

We have mostly winged it with accommodation although now try and have something booked for night of arrival.

Have a great trip.

Rettie

You might see and enjoy a lot more deer if you stay at Deer Run Bed & Breakfast on Big Pine Key for a night. The deer visit there every morning and evening. We stayed there recently and it was great.

The easiest place to find wildlife is the Everglades. You'll pass by the Florida City entrance on the way to the Keys. It's going to start to be a bit hot and buggy in May but I would give it a try. Directions are in this go list.

Maybe turn one of your Key West nights into a night in the upper keys. This would cut down on the drive time on the way back to Sarasota and give you a chance at more exploration. You should also consider the glass bottom boat trip from Pennekamp State park (Key Largo) - the reef is amazing.
