Dry Tortugas- Sunny Days vs Yankee Freedom

These 2 days trips to the Tortugas looks exactly the same except for the boat.

Can anyone tell me if there is a reason one would be better over the other?

Is there outside seating on both boats?

Which is better?

The day out is almost identical, except for the quality of the boat. The Yankee Freedom is a far better boat, IMHO. It has an air conditioned lower deck, an outdoor upper sun deck. The boat holds 200 but takes only 100 passengers, so there is a lot of room. Sunny Days holds 100 and takes 100, has no outdoor seating, and when the seas are rough gets tossed around a bit more than the YF. The YF also has a reasonably priced cash bar on the ride back to Key West. You will be spending 4 hours round trip on the boat, so for me, being in the more comfortable Yankee Freedom makes it worth the extra expense.

This very question comes up quite often. As noted by the previous poster, the Yankee Freedom does seem to be the more comfortable of the 2 boats, but it is more expensive. We took the Sunny Days Fast Cat and had no problems. We were quite comfortable, there was outside seating in the back, and they served a very nice cold cut-type lunch with side dishes. Non-alcoholic beverages were provided, as was a continental breakfast on the way out, and snacks on the way back in. Unlike the Yankee Freedom, there is no bar on board and no alcoholic beverages are provided.

We did hit some pretty rough water coming back (which we had been warned about before we ever boarded the boat in the morning), but Capt. Johnny did a great job and we never felt unsafe. One very small person did get seasick in the rough water, but hey, what are kids for, anyway?? And we beat the Yankee Freedom back to dock, even though we both left Ft. Jefferson at the same time.

First week of June will be low season. Wait to book until you are down there and can plan on a day where the forcase is for a very good day. You can walk to the Key West Bight and get a look at the two boats if you like. The Fast Cat moors in front of the Conch Republic Seafood Co. and the Yankee Freedom is just past the Half Shell Raw Raw.

You may be able to get a discount by booking at one of the booths along Duval Street.

Thanks pjk! It really takes a load off your mind when you know you don't have to reserve so early. Thanks also for the tips about the booths on Duval Street.
