We arrived in Miami after an uneventful flight from Phila - grabbed our rental car from Budget and made a run for Key West. The drive is ok to do once in awhile but for us - we really prefer to fly straight into Key West. But we thought it would be neat for the kids to see all of the Keys once.
We arrived in at the Ocean Key about 3pm. We were about an hour early for check in and our room was not ready. The manager saw that we were a bit travel worn and gave us an upgrade to a one bedroom suite that faced out to the Gulph and looked right down at the band that played nightly on the pier. It was fabulous! Lovely room and worked well as it had one king bed and a pull out double in the living room..... made life much easier for all involved! We got to enjoy a little nightlife even when the kids were in bed - just had to sit out on the balcony and listen to the music and watch the sights. The one thing we were fascinated with was watching the snorkel boat that also does Commotion on the Ocean come in and out all day long - wow those folks work hard and have a really long day! I hope folks realize that when the are done and the tip jar is out..... So anyway - I digress.... We then went to grab a bite to eat and then hit the pool for a little bit.
Day 2 - We had breakfast at the Hot Tin Roof since we had a package deal where we had a $100 resort credit to use up per day. Lovely food and great setting. I had a salmon omlet that was to die for! Then we headed out to Fort Zachary Taylor's beach. Kids were not a fan of the walk but were thrilled when we got there. Rented a few chairs and an umbrella and swam in the Gulph - it was wonderful. Lots of fish to see out by the rocks so didn't really need to go on a snorkelling trip this time. Will save that for another trip as the kiddies get a little older.... Then back to the hotel and off to the Rum Barrel for dinner. Kid friendly and good food.... back to the room to listen to music and get the kids settled in for the night.
Day 3 - had breakfast again in the hotel - but sat inside this time as it was already climbing temp wise.... Then rented an electric car for the day. Took it up to the Butterfly conservatory where we spent at least an hour - it truly is fascinating and the kids loved it! Then off to the Southernmost point for the obligatory picture - our last one as a family was missing our newest addition so we had to update it! Then off to the beach again - another great day there - lots of fish and even the youngest who is 6 wasn't afraid at all! As we were headed back to the hotel - realized that the electric car was almost drained - which was sort of sad since we had only gone 11 miles so we took it back to the dealer and they promptly gave us another one that had a good enough charge to get us through the rest of the day. Then picked up rental for our drive back ( sad time....) and returned the electric car. Off to Fogarty's for dinner. The nice thing about this place was that it is very kid friendly but had some adult food that was to die for! Kids of course had chicken fingers and fries but we were able to get a yummy seared tuna appetizer that would rival anywhere on the island. So much so that we ordered another one for a late night snack at the hotel..... and then we both had filets that were perfect. The food was not only delicious but the presentation was beautiful as well. That's hard to find in a place where you are also comfortable with your kids there too! Back to the hotel to listen to the band....
Day 4 - sad day.... off to Two Friends for breakfast - good food - its always one of our stops along the way... then back to the hotel and checked out. Long travel day back but looking forward to our next trip!
