Private vacation rentals

Just wanted to find out if it is normal for a private rental owner to ask for the entire amount by check before we arrive. We will be arriving on Dec 22 and the owner wants us to send a check now for the entire amount. We found the rental on the Home Away site.

Yes, It is quite normal for real estate agencies and owners wanting full payment a minimum of one month in advance for a home vacation rental. Just know who you are renting from. If renting from an individual, be wary, and make sure that they have a transient license. Most real estate agencies in Key West are very good. At Home In Key West is one I've dealt with several times.

A month out or even longer is normal. Just be sure who you are renting from. Can you search the tax rolls and be sure they actually own the property?

It is really important to check for a Transient Licence. There are instances of vacations being ruined when officials have done licence checks and finding they are not in order.

We always use a rental company for this reason.

I've rented through three different reputable key west companies and having full payment 30 days prior to arrival is the norm.

In your case if you could tell us the name of the company you are working with on the specific property we may be able to put your worries to ease. If it's an indiviual owner that may be a little tougher.

Most vacation rentals are due 30-60 days in advance.Pay by credit card at least you have a extra level of protection. Make sure they have a transient rental licence.
