Coming to Key West

We are staying at Coconut Beach Resor. How far of a walk is it to Duval St. We would like to do some snorkeling can you go on your own anywhere? Should you book any trips before you get there or wait and do it when we get there?

There are a couple of places where you can snorkel from shore. One is at the beach at for Zachary Taylor where there is a small entrance fee and where you can rent snorkeling equipment and a chair, and there is a place to buy a drink and snacks. http://www.fortzacharytaylor.com/ And on the other side of the island at Higgs Beach, between the two piers. The beach is free there and there is a small place, Tropical Watersports, which will also rent equipment and a chair.

But the best snorkeling is out at the reef or in the Sanctuary. Currently, up until the end of spring break in April, the Fury Org is having 1/2 off for ladies to snorkel. http://www.furycat.com/ But they cater to the cruise ships and tend to get crowded. I like Sebago better http://www.keywestsebago.com/ Same type of boat and they generally go to the same place (Sand Key) but the boat is almost always less crowded. You can wait until you are in Key West to book.

Coconut Beach Resort is a hidden gem. My wife and I spent our first KW trip there for a week and we loved it. The view out through the coconut palms, past the pool and patio out to sea is fabulous and you can see both sunrise and sunset from right there on property. The little door on the side of the patio leads directly into the bar at Louie's Backyard - a wonderful restaurant. Casa Marina on the other side is magnificent - be sure to stroll through the property and consider indulging in the beachside couple's massage with the sea breeze on your back and palms swishing overhead. That was one of the highlights of our trip.

As for walking - yes be ready to do some hiking to get to lower Duval. Rent a couple of bikes and you'll cut down a lot of time to get here or there and a taxi ride now and then works.

Enjoy your stay - you're going to love that spot!

One of the less known snorkel areas is near your hotel along the old pilings at Higgs Beach. It is about two blocks from your resort.
