Better of Beaches

Coming in April with another couple who were hesitant to come to Key West because of its lack of beaches. Which would be the best choice of beaches, Fort Zach, Bahai Honda or Smathers. Any help appreciated

Bahia Honda is nice, but not in Key West. It's a beautiful 37 mile drive away. Make a day of it and visit the middle Keys while this far South.

Unless you are in key west for a day or limited time, go to all of them. The beaches on key west are all in walking distance to eachother anyways. Higgs beach is another one to add.

I would say they are all about the same, nothing wildly different about any. Bahia honda and fort zach have nicer scenery but you need to pay to get in. And bahia is a drive.

If the only reason that they want to go on vacation is for a nice long, white sandy beach, they will be disappointed. Period.

If they want to go on a vacation for water sports, and history, and sight-seeing, and relaxing, and to hang around some OK beaches. Key West is your place.

If it were me, I'd give them the scoop, let them make the decision. If you try and "talk them into it", they won't be happy.

If you are staying for a week (where, by the way?) I'd walk over to the beach at Fort Zach and take a look. The admission is so little that it would be worth it before you decided to spend a day there. You can also do this for Smathers and Higgs, which are free, but it is probably going to take longer, but if you rent bikes, you can make a morning or afternoon of scoping out what you think is the best beach.

Someone took these photos of the beach at Fort Zach from the air and I borrowed them

I've never been over there but it doesn't look too shabby to me, and I'd go there before I went to Higgs or Smathers.

But then I'd look into things that can take the place of a beach. For example either Danger Charters or the Sebago Island T'Ing

Or maybe a jet ski trip around the island

Or something Clearly Unique http://clearlyuniquecharters.com/

It's possible you won't miss a beach at all.

Since you won't be staying in a hotel on any of these beaches, and will have to walk, bike and drive to get to them you may want to check with your friends to see if that's what they are okay with.

All these have concession stands, with rentals. Smathers usually has at least one outfit operating parasailing. Bahia Honda is more rustic, with the most wildlife.

I love a good beach (and have spent 8 days doing very little but hanging out on Daytona Beach, for instance), but I have never spent much time on one in Key West. There is just too much to do and see. We are very rarely inside unless it is raining or we are in a museum or attraction. We eat outside when possible, drink outside when possible, walk or bike from place to place, and hang out at the pool and/or gardens at the hotel or B & B.

Have your friends check out the different beaches online as well as all of the attractions and activities listed above and they may decide they don't need a big stretch of white sand to have fun!

Thanks for the beach help. Our friends knew situation before we booked back in September. They frequent Aruba and Puorto Rico and thats where they wanted to go but I wanted to go to Key West(was here 2 years ago with my husband) and loved it. We let them pick hotel, The Hyatt Resort and we are staying our first night in South Beach. We will be in Key West for 5 days. We plan to go on a fishing charter as we didn't get to go last time and I though a picnic lunch at one of the beaches would be nice just wasn't sure which one. I know Bahia Honda is a little ride but if it's the nicest beach would do it. Fort Zach looks pretty too. Thanks again for the help.
