Just returned last night. Usually we stay in the Keys for 7 to 10 days, but could only get away for a few days this time. Four days is just not enough. Felt like we got there and it was time to go. We usually stay at the lower end of Duval, so this also gave us an opportunity to try places we sometimes don't get to.
For the first time we stayed at a resort - Southernmost Hotel. Let me say that is was absolutely fabulous. The staff is great, the properties (you can use facilities at any of the Southernmost properties) are well maintained and it is great having the beach, pool, and bar(s) all at your disposal. Room was clean, nice flat screen TV, excellent bath products and comfortable bed.
Arrived at 11:15 and at the beach by 11:30. Gorgeous day on Saturday. Fletcher who runs the beach service remembered us from all our past visits and had our chairs ready and set up for us within minutes. Although the beach here is small and typical of most beaches in the Keys, we still enjoy it a lot. The restaurant on the beach is very good and they have a great happy hour.
Lounged by the pool and beach all day. Had lunch at Southermost Cafe. Split fish and chips, which was really good and enough for two. Had a drink at happy hour and then clean up and get ready for the evening.
Made the obligatory trip to Mallory Square - a quick walk through as we have been there/done that. Headed to Sunset Pier to listen to music and enjoy the sunset. In the past we have not had a good experience with food here. This time, however, it was very good. Just shared an order of empanadas but they were very, very good. It was noticeably less crowded overall in Key West last weekend than I have seen it in the past.
Left the pier and made the rounds of the lower Duval bars. Nothing really memorable and were pretty tired, so headed back to the hotel for a drink and a quick swim. Stopped for frozen key lime on a stick. Probably one of my favorite desserts of all time.
Sunday was beach and pool again. Tried Ana's Cuban Cafe. Excellent! I love Cuban food and she does an excellent cuban mix. Rice and beans are good as well. You can get most of the sandwiches at breakfast too. Based on recommendations from TA went to Blackfin for dinner. It was very good, but not one of my top ten meals in Key West. I am glad we went, but with all the choices I'm not sure we would go back. I will say that the banana crepes for dessert were really, really good.
Monday was beach and pool. Lunch at Banana Cafe - excellent. First time here and would definitely go back again for lunch or breakfast. Amazing crepes with just about any filling you can think of. Did a little shopping on Upper Duval. Just a few small things to bring home. I really like the shop "Cocktail".
Did the wind and wine sail with Danger Charters. Second time doing this and it was great again. It was relaxing and low key, just what we wanted this time. Last time we did this the rest of the evening was a blur. However, we had a few other places to go on the list for the evening so I slowed the wine consumption down just a tad.
Stopped by Smokin Tuna. First time here and this is probably our new favorite go to place. Excellent steamed shrimp and burgers. Music was also good. Met a few of the other passengers from our flight and hung out with them. Had such a good time we all headed up to Virgilio's for Martini Monday. One drink was it for me here and then off to bed. I loved Virgilio's. Next time we will try the food as well, as others in the group said how good it was.
Tuesday, again beach and pool. Lunch and breakfast at Southernmost. We had a free breakfast coupon from hotel, so had eggs and sausage and veggie omelet. Both were good. Lunch was fish tacos, which were excellent. I think Southernmost does a great job with food and drinks. We have never had anything here that is not really good.
Last night so headed out a little early to hit happy hour at Alonzo's. Also last night for stone crab, so splurged on a couple of claws. Food was excellent - shrimp, clams casino. Did the Bight bars -- Schooner Wharf and Turtle Kraals. Did not make it to White Tarpon this trip.
Another stop at Smokin Tuna and met up with our friends from the flight again. Last stop, Virgilio's. Let me say that they make one of the best martinis ever. HOWEVER -- I had two (I would call them the memory eraser) -- because I have no idea how I even ended up at the hotel that night. My husband said I appeared fine, but the last thing I remember is sitting at the bar. That never happens to me! Luckily I woke up feeling good after 8 hours of sleep.
Wednesday time to leave. Where did the days go? Quick breakfast at Banana Cafe and then on to the airport.
Spent the entire flight looking at the Homes magazines and trying to figure out when (or if) we could ever afford to retire here.
Advice to anyone who has a trip coming up: This is our 10th trip and we only did half of what we planned. Just relax, meet people, and enjoy.
