Young Family Wondering What We Can Do in Key West?

Hi, we're traveling to the Fort Lauderdale area at the end of July and thought it would be a good change to visit Key West for 3 nights. Our children are 4, 6 and 9. Any recommendations of what we can do? We're considering the Marriott for our accommodations.

Thanks for any suggestions!

The one kids see to like is the Butterfly Conservatory on Duval Street. There is also the Wrecker's Museum with great views from the tower. The Key West Aquarium, especially during one of the shark feedings. The lighthouse, also for views. You can all go out on the Tortuga IV, a largish fishing boat where everything is provided for you (except fish) and many of the restaurants at the Key West Bight will cook your catch. And even a day sail on the Jolly II Rover. You will run out of family-friendly things to do before you run out of days.

I agree with PJK, The Butterfly conservatory and wreckers museum are great, I'd skip the aquarium and Ripleys. A 1/2 day snorkel trip might be good if they are swimmers.

Even if they are not swimmers or snorkelers they would enjoy a trip out to the reef. Look at Sebago's Reef Sail: a five hour trip on a nice, two-masted schooner which includes a great lunch. Some can snorkel but otherwise you can put on vests and grab a noodle and floot in the clear, blue water.

The butterfly conservatory is a must! Also I loved the Aquarium with both of my kids - about an hour or so is used for that.... Also, get out on the water - even if it is only with a noodle and a life vest - beats the Jersey shore anyday! Ft Zach is also another place where they can stand in three feet of water with a mask and just submerge themselves by a rock close to the beach and see lots of fish! They don't have to be strong swimmers for that.... also there is a snack bar there for a lunch at the beach (a little pricey but the experience is lovely...). My kids have also enjoyed just chilling at the pool with nice weather! There are some historical things that are relevant for kids depending on their interests.... Just sometimes wandering the stands around Mallory Square and seeing all the neat things for sale can be interesting too..... Enjoy!

couple of words of caution regarding your young children in KW, the beach at Ft Zach is more rocky than sandy, highly recommend they all have water shoes if you do go there otherwise it could be a miserable outing for u and the kids, down near the Butterfly place on the other side of the street is a house that has woman out on the porch wearing suggestive clothing(still not sure what that business is for?) and I remember seeing many young families very quickly walking past that place and having to explain to their kids why those woman on the porch are dressed like that and why are they waving/smiling at daddy..also if you go to South Beach be aware that there may be some women topless on that beach as well as in the water...
