casa morada or cheeca lodge?

Hello,

Me and my girlfriend are taking my dad on holiday in the beginning of Jan. We are spending 5 nights in islamorada and wondering which one was best?

We have got the option of a 1 bedroom suite in both places. We are looking for somehwere we can fish on the pier, somewhere to swim, a few restaurants close by and just a few recreation facilities.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which one?

Thanks,

Chris

Both have all the ammenities you are looking for.

Cheeca Lodge is much more upscale. It is also much bigger and not as laid back/casual. If you need a restaurant on site, then Cheeca, although it is not an inexpensive meal.

Casa Morada - much smaller and quieter. There is a restaurant and bar within walking distance of Casa - it's good for drinks and a snack - not really for a meal. foods ok. (Lor a lei) There is a great place for an American breakfast in front of Casa - Mangrove Mikes. a local hangout.

Casa has sunset - Cheeca has sunrise.

Casa will have the cooler winds for Jan, Cheeca the warmer ones. Just a few things for thought.

I think at Cheeca you would not be permitted to fish on their pier (dock). The last time we were there (Mother's Day brunch 2 yrs ago), I could not believe the attitudes. I was driving a Porsche with out-of-state plates. The guard at the entrance asked us to "state our business." There was no "hi, hello or welcome." Felt like I was entering a restricted area. From the parking lot, a bellman escorted us inside and pointed out where we were permitted and where we were not permitted! As we were enjoying our brunch, he actually came back to check on us - interrupted our lunch - to point out that we were NOT permitted to walk on their beach or dock!

Needless to say, we found a manager at this point. She apologized profusely and said "no wonder so few folks are taking advantage of our brunch." She offered to comp our brunch, which we declined because we didn't complain to get a free meal. We also have not returned . While the facilities are nice, the attitude is not.

I think Cheeca wants to be an Ocean Reef Club but falls short in most ways. I eat at ORC once a year and EVERYONE from the front gate to the wait staff in the restaurant is polite, friendly and always asking if they can be of help. Cheeca could take lessons.

Sorry to be long winded. I just found the Cheeca attitude a turn off. I would not enjoy staying there.

My husband and I have stayed at Cheeca many times and always stay for a fornight and have never had problems fishing from the pier. We also have chartered a boat and gone on a party boat all which have been enjoyable. Cheeca is in walking distance of quite a few places to eat. I am sure you will enjoy it where ever you choose to stay.
