Do we need a car?

Hello,

Trying to plan a trip to Gulf Winds in May but we dont want to rent a car. When we travel we mainly use our feet and public transportation with the very rare taxi to get around the areas we are in. Is this possible here in Longboat Key? Looks like there is trolley service that connects to the main Sarasota bus system that should get us most places we would like to explore. We grocery shop and cook in most of the time and arent looking for nightlife. We would want to explore beaches and nature areas mostly along with a little town window shopping. We are pretty adventerous and fairly active and not afraid to walk or possibly even rent bikes (if available) to make this beautiful location affordable for us. Are we crazy to think we can do 2 weeks here without a car and still be able to explore away from the Condo? Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you want a walking around town with great beaches - look at Clearwater Beach. It was voted best beach town this year. It has wonderful Gulf front restaurants and bars - great to watch sunsets from. Everything in Clearwater Beach is walkable and clean.

St. Pete Beach is quieter than Clearwater Beach, but a bit more spread out, so you would likely want to use public transportation to get around. There are condos and hotels with kitchens located right on the beautiful beach - and depending on where you stay the beach isn't too busy.

Both Clearwater and St. Pete Beach have free beach ride services that operate for the price of a tip. The service is great and works well for picking up groceries or going out for the night and not wanting to walk home.

Thank you all for your great feedback. I think we are now deciding between a Sarasota and Fort Myers Beach. Wherever we land we most likely will rent a car for a couple of days hopefully pass thru all of the places mentioned in these posts!

Sarasota does not have a beach..look at Siesta Key, Lido Key or Longboat Key.

AMI has better transportation than SK.

But if you stay near enough to walk to the Village (but not In the Village) you will be set;
