Any good bicycling on Marco?

Can one ride on the beach, as at Kiawah Island, L.A., etc ? Even if not, are there nice trails and such? Or is it all road riding?

In short, is Marco a pleasant place to bike for, say, 3-4 hours? Thanks for advice.

Hi - I don't believe you are permitted to ride bikes on the beach at Marco. The sand isn't hard enough either, I don't believe. There's no boardwalk on the beach but there are lovely sidewalks all over the Island which make riding very easy. Plus the Island is pretty flat so riding is enjoyable.

If you look at mapmyride.com they show some great biking routes on Marco and some even into Goodland. We love to bike on Marco. Enjoy. If you stop at the island bike shop, the workers there will tell you some great places to ride to.

Thanks for replies.

Interesting: One is permitted to ride on sidewalks in Marco? That's unusual. (Doesn't seem safe.)

I was told at the island bike shop that you can legally ride on the sidewalks. The bicyclists do it on Marco and it really isn't an issue. Walker and cyclists cooperate with each other.

You can get a bit of a work out, by riding around in the "Estates" section which is very hilly. These hills are said to be the highest elevation in Florida south of Tampa. Also, the homes in this area are some of the largest and most grand. Further, you'll also see some terrific water views. This section is accessed from the southern most section of Barfield.

Thanks, Randy. We're kind of oldsters, so hills aren't really our thing. But we enjoy looking at handsome homes, so we may swing by that area in our car.

I think it only fair to put Marco 'hills' in context....they wouldn't even be noticed most other places in the world! Which makes Marco (and Florida in general) a fantastic place to cycle.

If you have the facility to carry your bike(s) on your car, why not drive a little way east along the 41, then park-up and cycle along one of the unmade roads - you'll be sure to see some interesting wildlife.

You can not ride bikes on the beach.

Beware when you go over bridges ... be careful ... in traffic you may need to walk your bike. I know the bridge on Winterberry it is recommended to walk it going West to East. Some of the bridges are not very wide for bikes and cars.
