biking on Marco Island

Are there any designated or safe lanes to ride bikes. also are there any bicycle rental places. We are not speed bikers, just recreational poke alongers who want to look at scenery.

How much freedom you will have to ride will somewhat depend on the time of year you go. We visit in the summer and ride all over the secondary roads as the traffic is incredibly light. When we see cars coming, we simply move to the side. There are also sidewalks, but they are kind of narrow and we've found that there isn't much room when someone is coming in the opposite direction.

If you are visiting from now until April, it will be a little more crowded (okay, a lot) and so the street may not be the best idea. Anyhow, there ARE places to ride and you should love coasting the streets/sidewalks of Marco, as the views are THE BEST!

There is a bike shop on the island, aptly named Island Bike Shop. You can look them up online to get rental information.

The South Collier blvd sidewalks are dual use and extra wide. The only problems are the intersections.

Bald Eagle drive from San Marco up to Collier is now also dual use wide sidewalks. Their are few intersections on this route.

There is a bike/walking bath around the Marco lake in Mackle park. It is terrific, only wish it was a bit longer.

Here is the brand new 2011 Marco Island bike map.

I also think it is important to note that the island bike shop will BRING the bikes to you and pick them up- nominal fee of course.

But this is a nice feature if you are not familiar with the island and don't want to have to bike back to your condo/hotel/house and leave a car at the shop.

Also, the bike shop offers the tandem and four seat bikes. We love the four seater so we can "poke" around the island as well together with the kids.

I only wish the island had GOLF CART lanes. What a blast that would be!
