Beach vibe in Melbourne?

We are looking for a place to stay for a couple weeks. We heard Melbourne was a good area. I can't seem to get a feel for the beach area. Are there bars/restaurants on the beach? I've heard it described as quiet, but how quiet is it?

We have a mix of older folks, as well as college students and everything in between. Just not a large party town like Daytona or Miami. There are a few bars beachside but everything is spread out, not a place you can walk to a lot of things. Spring / summer are busier at the beach. We have a downtown area that was refurbished and has quite a few bars, restaurants and shops and new ones coming all the time. Once a month they have Friday Fest which is a street party with vendors, bands, etc.

There are only 4 major hotels beachside and several mom / pop places. The Hilton and the Radisson are in walking distance to Lou's Blues and a couple other bars and restaurants.
