Food and Car Rental

Hi all:

We will be in Miami for a few days. we would like to know some info about Cuban food. we don't have any experience with Cuban food and would like to try it while we are in Miami. Would you please recommend some good places for Cuban food? We love to try hole-in-the-wall sort of place as well as more upmarket place.

Also, we will be staying at the Tempo hotel. We haven't decided whether or not to rent a car. We always prefer not to drive if we can help it. However, we are fairly active travelers and probably want to visit some other areas. Please share your thoughts/experience.

Many thanks in advance.

This link is my guide to the area that includes Cuban fare. A hole-in-the-wall Downtown is called Floridita (see the map), an upscale Cuban spot on South Beach (oceanfront hotel, top rated chef) is D. Rodriguez Cuba - a famous Cuban cafe on Calle Ocho is called Versailles... (famous enough that you can get in a cab and say - "Versailles on Calle Ocho" and he'll take you there).

If you want to get an up close and personal knowledge of Cuban culture in Miami, visit Calle Ocho (SW 8 Street) which is a sort of our Cuban Main Street not far from Downtown. Learn more here

I see you are from San Diego so I'll offer this advice...

Cuban food is not as spicy as Mexican food and there is less emphasis on peppers overall. The elements of Cuban cooking are similar in their use of pork, beans, rice and the low and slow cooking of most meats - Cubans do not do RARE.

Most Cuban restaurants have bilingual menus and daily specials - the specials are often a great choice. If you are a vegetarian, be aware that there is little hope of avoiding pork fat or "manteca" (lard) in nearly everything but the salad and the coffee (kidding - sort of... only the coffee is fat free but it is 68% sugar!) Black beans are often prepared with pork. I have a vegetarian friend who always says she will "just eat the black beans" and we all accept that she's in deepest denial about what gives black beans that special flavor!

From the Tempo, you can taxi or bus across the causeway to South Beach in no time! Print these maps to find fun over there :

A 25 cent shuttle circles South Beach (map is included above) and a FREE monorail picks up just by your hotel that circles Downtown -

There are some cool museums Downtown at the Government Center Stop (Cuban fare by the museums = Cacique), a night time waterfront market (sunset drinks not great food) nearby called Bayside where the tour boats to the star's homes are found, a mall filled with restaurants & bars at the tenth street promenade, an all night honky tonk bar with live music EVERY night at Riverwalk Station called Tobacco Road (great seafood next door at River Oyster Bar). The main shopping street Downtown is Flagler Street where you'll find funky shops, the discount diamond/jewelry exchange, hidden malls with cool ethnic food courts behind the shops (redefines "hole in the wall" - check behind Marshall's as an insider's tip)... In that area I like Cevi.Che 105 (Peruvian Food) & Fratelli Milano (Italian).

Enjoy (and please report back to this forum your trip report!)
