Visiting Englanders - hire car or taxi?

Our family of nine are staying two days pre cruise in Fort Lauderdale and would like to spend a day in Miami ( the kids want to "shop till they drop" in one of the Outlets) What is the best (and cheapest) way for us to travel about? How easy is driving in Miami - and parking? Which is the best Outlet to visit............they love designer clothes! Hubby and I just want to mooch and take in the ambiance.

If you really want to spend the day shopping, I recommend renting a car and visiting these two: Sawgrass Mills for outlet/discount shopping, and Aventura mall for a more traditional US mall experience. Parking is very easy and free at the malls, but both are very large and you can easily spend a day at each.

Edit: taxi will be very expensive, but if you just go to Aventura Mall and back, it may be same or cheaper than a rental car.

As posted Aventura is lovely but if u want an outlet mall sawgrass is ur best bet. The sawgrass express runs from miami to the mall . find a local hotel and enquire about bookings if you want to go.

Rent a car. Sawgrass Mills is far out west so if you rent you can go at your own leisure. There are plenty of restaurants out there so you really could spend the entire day there.

well you will need a big car! You have 2 days and I presume that they are full days ie not arriving or departing? Depending on where in lauderdale you are Aventura may be your best option. plenty to see and do and close by if its hollister gap a and f they are after they will be happy and theres plenty for older children too. As for doing both in a day ... well people go to both for many hours. the more up to date stock will be at Aventura. renting a car is ok but factor in pick up drop off insurance and maybe tolls... have a look on the map and decide how far you want to travel. bus is an option in certain parts of broward to Aventura.

Thanks for all the advice....the vote goes to Sawgrass Mills as they all want the bargains! Looks like its about 20 miles from where we are staying in Fort Lauderdale so will have to look into shuttels or trains

Then I would find the concierge in a Hotel and ask them - they run shuttle bus services to Sawgrass. They pick up at various Hotels and they will return you at a set time to your pick up point.

Jill -

At SAWGRASS there is a separate outside area called Colonnade Shops where all the BIG designer outlets are located (start THERE!) Move inside the main mall at Neimans and Saks if you fancy designer goods for deep discounts. Marshalls for designer shoes & trainers.

By using a shuttle from one of the hotels you could save quite a bit of money... possibly even free of charge! Sawgrass has an entire marketing strategy to provide vans to shoppers. Prices are low compared to many places around the world plus you'll be getting a delicious rate of exchange. See? You can't afford not to come! Be sure to mention to whoever you book with that there are nine of you.

Happy new year to all.
