24 hrs in M precruise - best way to get a taste of the city?

Hi! I'll be arriving at Miami airport at noon on Saturday March 8, with a cruise departing 24 hours later from the Port of Miami. I'd love to get a taste of Miami that afternoon and evening - walking around, shopping, dining, nightlife... Two questions: where should I aim to explore (on foot)? And where should I stay? Near the activities I mentioned, and look for a hotel shuttle to the cruise terminals (or a taxi), or stay near the cruise terminals, and take a taxi or public transportation to wherever the sights are? I don't want to spend over $100 for the one night of lodging. Thanks!

Aside from a hostel on South Beach Im not sure where to find accommodations to meet your budget. You might find something near the airport and then use the Airport Flyer bus to/from South Beach or the Orange Metrorail line into Downtown Miami.
