Corral Gables and smaller beach hotel

My wife and I are attending a November wedding in Corral Gable (tropical Gardens).

We're beach sort of people who enjoy eclectic food & dinging, some shopping, no interest in clubbing.

Thinking we want to stay on the beach and walk to nearby restaurants/shopping.

1) We like smaller upscale properties and need beach hotel recommendations...

2) Do we need to rent a car or just taxi it

3) How far is Tropical gardens in Coral Gables...

Double check the invitation - is the wedding at Vizcaya Garden? or Fairchild Garden?

To get to the wedding, you should probably rent an el cheapo car w/ pick up on South Beach for 24 hours and return it the next day.

Check rates at the Angler's Resort or small hotels like Villa Italia, St Augustine or Crest / Cadet or Sense Hotels.

My guide to the fun food u seek is here:

To be in the center of or within walking distance of the center of SoBe and of the beach you want to stay somewhere below 23d street (address number under 2300) and on or within a block of Washington or Collins Aves., or Ocean drive which are the main north-south avenues on the east (beach) side of the island. Fairchild Tropical Gardens is at the far southern tip of Coral Gables & a cab will run some $50+ including tip each way from & to SoBe.

AG's suggestion about a rental car for the day may be the best option.
