Transportation in South Beach

We are flying into South Beach for 4 nights before driving down to the Keys for a few days, From Dec 30-Jan 6 over the holidays. We will need to rent a car to get down to the keys; however, I was wondering whether or not would it would be wise to rent a car for the whole week so we could have a car in South Beach. It is SUCH A CROWDED TIME OF YEAR. We are going to the Heat game at the American Airlines Arena Jan 2, so we could use the car then; is it worth the hassle of renting a car for that or not? If not, what is the best way to get to AA arean from SB during holidays!!!!????? We have our 10 and 11 year old kids. Thanks!!!

Best way to get to the AA arena is by taxi (approx $20 each way). There is also a public bus.

Re. car, def better to rent only when you are ready to go to Key West. You don't need one while in south beach and parking overnight is expensive or a bother. There is a 25c local bus to get around, and most places are walkable.

You don't need a car while in south beach, parking is scarce and expensive, and don't even get me started about the towing companies (calling them vultures is an insult to that type of bird) There are shuttle buses that circulate between the tip of south beach and 22nd street that cost a quarter and run until midnight. If you NUST have a car while staying in south beach, keep it in a city garage. You can easily rent a car at any of a dozen or so outlets in the area and return it at the same place, and ylou'll pay less than if you rented it at the airport.
