The most popular place in town is called Joe's Stone Crab because the family owned and operated restaurant brought the hard shell crabs to popular attention about a hundred years ago when Miami Beach was just a baby!!

There are VERY few authentic "landmark" restaurants in this city but Joe's is definitely a special place. Best bet is to go there for lunch when the crowds are not as daunting but you can also pop into their takeaway restaurant next door to eat at picnic tables or pack them up to go. South Pointe Park is right across the street so you can cater an amazing picnic by the water as the locals like to do.

Since you have a car, the other way to go is Casablanca's Restaurant downtown or a road trip out to Everglades City to see where the fishermen bring them in.

As Gertrude Stein might have said, a stone crab is a stone crab is a stone crab, I'm told that the stone crabs at nearby Monty's, at 300 Alton Road, are just as good and less expensive. And you avoid Joe's notoriously long waits and bribe-greedy maitre d's. There are other places as well which I'm sure you could find on line or through guidebooks.

I'm not saying their food isn't very good - it is - but, more than for any other reason, Joe's is famous for being famous.

Richard1793 - I like your phrase" Joe's is famous for being famous" and I completely agree. I recommend Casablanca's Restaurant on the Miami River. For foodies this is a great place in the city with one of the best fish markets I know. The food is good and the ambiance is more of a local scene which bring a more authentic flavor to the food in my opinion.

Have a great time in Miami!
