Family things to do in NSB

My family is planning our end of May vacation in NSB. We will be 2 adults and 5 kids (2 - 13 yo, 2 - 11 you, 1 - 8 yo). Does anyone have any budget-friendly suggestions for things to do or places to eat?

Yes! There's so much to do. Visit ponce inlet and see the turtles and all the surfers. JB's fish camp is a great sea food shack and is right on the river. You can literally see dolphins and manatees from your table. Also, it's very family friendly and casual, and not to mention inexpensive! Great food too. You can also rent canoes and kayaks their to kayak on the river! You can visit daytona speed way and the flea market. And if all else fails, there's always the beach!

The museum in Daytona Beach (mainland) has a bit of something for everybody, from grandma's crystal punch bowl to old Coca Cola vending machines and railroad cars.

It's worth a drive south to Turtle Mound, a mini-mountain of oyster shells.

Thank you! All of these things sound like just what we would like to do.

My next question, is there a place for the kids to fish? And do we need a license? Nothing fancy, just a place for them to cast a line.

Here's the regulations on fishing (mixed with hunting):

Thanks for the regulations on fishing. Is there a pier that would rent poles and such? We won't have enough room to pack a lot of that type of gear, and I just thought it would be a fun thing for the kids to do.

We are doing this trip super-inexpensive. We had some last minute expenses that took out some of entertainment budget, so now it will be mostly beach/pool days, with some exploring to Turtle Mound and Blue Spring park, up to Ponce Inlet, etc.

I've never bothered with Florida's beach piers, so don't have the answer. Turtle Mound is, by present-day standards, a modest attraction, but it represents a vast number of oyster shells and was a major landmark. The mound has a number of unusual plant species due to all the calcium from those shells and from its being by the ocean, protected a bit from freezes.

Next questions...:-)

We are staying at Coconut Palms, and I would like to know what are the closest grocery stores. And what about thrift stores, any in that area? We are not big shoppers, but love thrift (secondhand) store browsing. Any suggestions are helpful!

There's a Publix supermarket at the beach end of the South Causeway.

For thrift stores, you should come to Vero Beach (except that we're too far away). The town is stuffed with places selling clothing, household goods, furniture, and assorted antiques. The high-income residential areas at the beach make for interesting hunting.
