Snarled traffic on Sanibel consists of off island employees and tourists. 8AM-11AM traffic going on island is bad. 3PM-6PM traffic going off island is bad. So, if coming to Captiva in the evening, you will be "reverse commuting" and should be fine. I usually use I-75 to Alico Rd. to 41 to come up from Naples to avoid US 41's many stoplights.

If you are traveling all the way to Captiva, you can come across the causeway and head straight instead of turning onto Periwinkle.... take the beach road -- make a right onto East Gulf Drive, which will turn into Middle Gulf Drive and then West Gulf Drive... you can take this route all the way to Rabbit Road, make a right onto Rabbit Road and then a left onto Sanibel/Captiva Road. This way you will avoid the traffic on Periwinkle Road. Good luck!
