overnight trip to the beach?

We are staying in Orlando in June, but want to drive to the gulf for a couple days so that our kids can see the ocean for the first time. Any suggestions for where we should take them? Also, we need overnight accommodations. Has anyone who had a similar experience give us some suggestions for hotels and good beaches? Thanks!

I suggest Siesta Key near Sarasota. Stay at Tropical Shores Resort....www.tropical shores.com

Siesta Key is nice. Sand is like fine white flour. It is a 2ish hour ride (I-4 W to I-75 S to SR-72 to Siesta Key) We liked our stay at Palm Bay Club. Collected some shells and saw dolphins and rays. Went out to dinner/shopping on Lido Key (close by). If interested go to the Siesta Key forum and chat with SRQgirl - she's the local expert.

Allow more like close to 3 hours from the Disney area, depending on the time of day. Certainly it will be at least 2.5 hours. If you want somewhere closer, Cocoa Beach is about an hour away - not as nice as Siesta Key, but still, very pleasant and the kids will not notice. They will be too busy playing in the sand and surf. LOL.

The experience of the ocean is very different from that of the gulf. If you want to show them the true ocean, you should go east and like the post above said, Cocoa Beach would be a excellent choice and a shorter drive. Look at the Sea Captain motel Clearwater - not on the beach but only 100 yards or so and some good reports.

We stayed at the BestWestern SeaWake at Clearwater Beach, right on the beautiful beach and not too big a hotel, nice rooms. Spent the 2nd day playing crazy golf (kids wanted to...) then took a boat ride around the harbour looking for dolphins, bit of shopping, fabulous dinner and spent the evening around the pier watching the sunset with the kids playing on the playground and wandering up and down the craft stalls, made a great break from the parks.

Think the restaurant was called Cooters, guy in the info booth recommended it and gave us some vouchers, it looked a bit run down from the outside but was brilliant inside and full of locals which has got to be a good sign, food was very yummy.
