I saw this on another forum and thought I'd post it here

I would be interested in anyone who has a view on this too as its the reason my friend and her husband decided against coming to florida with us as she is too terrified to try getting on a plane in case she doesnt fit!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a question regarding space in the plane seats for those who arent exactly waife like lol ..

my Sister in law is coming to florida with us in Jan and she is a size 28 ... we looked at ungrading but its fine for her at just another £140 or so but for us it would be 4 times that and we arent the ones that want the extra space...

we have marked out the legroom using chairs and it seems that she would have plenty of legroom even with 30" pitch (and we will have 32") but she is now concerned about the seat width and whether the seatbelt will go round her (or how embarrassing it would be to have to ask for a seatbelt extension!)

has any larger lady out there got any views on this that might help her feel better... I would be very grateful! :-)))

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

anyone??

Well, my answer to this, as delicicate as I can put it, would be does she have medical condition that causes her obese stature? If that is not the case than this should be a wake up call to seek help to lose this weight that is hindering her quality of life. If it is a genetic problem, than she should not be embarssed by this. I know I have 2 bad discs in my back that have been a severe hinderence to my quality of life. And it is especially frustrating not to be able to do the things I would like to do with my 10 year old son that I would like to do. But I have been pretty much been told that there is not alot than can be done about it. My son is now of the age that he understands this, and pretty much accepts it, but I know he gets bummed sometimes. I will feel guilty sometimes for a moment, but then realize these are the cards I have been dealt, so live and enjoy the best I can.

thanks IowaninUK , you are quite right there ...

bssd, you have no right to judge anyone else, esp when its not even the person concerned that is asking the question!

it was a perfectly sensible question and you behaving like a horse's a** doesnt make it any less so...

I realise from reading a few of your other posts that stirring up trouble on these boards is basically a hobby for you but there was no need to be so ignorant here!

your attitide disgusts me!

Oh, her we go again Iowa. You don"t have Vegas online to start with, so it will be me now.. Read the question. They are looking for a opinion. Have you moved back to the States yet? Maybe you disposition will change then. But I doubt it. Seems like you are a very unhappy soul. But that being said, don"t start with me. I was not crying, nor will I ever cry. They asked for a view, and I gave them one. If you don"t like it. Tough. I don"t need sarcasm from you. I answered the person question on a genuine basis.

You know what, I guess I have misunderstood this question. So I am going to apoligize to all that think I was trying to offend someone. That was certainly not my intention at all. I think I know what I have run into here. I hope you get the answer to your question from a different, more resourceful source. But I am still not sure what I said to offend people here. Please tell me.

I have no idea what you're talking about bssd. I'm a very happy person. Sorry for your problems. They were not looking for an "opinion", they were looking for an answer.

I think the smallest seats I've seen in economy are 17 1/2" wide so you may measure width in addition to leg room. If it doesn't work, I'd upgrade, but there may be people out there with experience who will answer.

Don't know why my post was removed!!! and I complained to TA. bssd was very disrespectful IMO and maybe TA has a problem with weight but I think their reaction was uncalled for.

Dear Laramakia,

I too have a sister in law who is heavy set as well. It is very expensive to have to upgrade to accomodate her, but what we've always done, since we all sit together is we always give her the aisle seat and we lift up the arm rests in between for a little extra room, it helps a somewhat. I see that you are in England, so were not talking about a short trip here. So that's something to really consider. How long can you travel and be uncomfortable.? But not everyone on the plane has to know she has a seat belt extender. When you board the plane you can discreetly ask the flight attendant, we have and they have always been very nice and quiet about it. In the end I say Who cares what other people think, Life is too short for that. Tell your sister in law to get on that plane and have a great time in Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what Iowa, you are exactly right. When I went back and read the post, I misread now with not on seat width. But I would now ask why what I wrote in my response was insulting? Some people are born to be overweight by genetics. Some eat there way to this. I know this for a fact because I am 6 foot tall and in high school weighed 155 lbs. When I got out of high school, I started drinking and eating every night and went up to 230 pounds! This was my fault! Not someone elses!. Over the years I have lost the weight and now weigh 165 pounds. Not everybody can do this, I follow a strict diet everyday. But if you eat you way to obesity, than you have no one to blame but yourself. Sorry if you feel that is cruel. But it is the truth.
