Disney Dining Plan Question

We go to Orlando next Friday and have the Disney Dining Plan, My understanding of it is that tips were included and so we couldn't have to leave a tip at every meal. However, I have just seen the information on the wdw website about the free Disney Dining Plan for 2008 and it says that gratuities are not included.

Has anyone been recently that can let us know if we will need to leave tips? We hadn't budgeted for that!!

The 2007 dining plan tips are included in the plan so you do not have to worry about carrying any money around. In the new plan for 2008 they took away the appetizer and you have to leave your own tip. I believe they are charging $1.00 less. Have a great trip!

That's correct; this year, tip is still included at 18% of the total bill.

Next year, tip nor appetizer will not be included, which is a poor deal for sure with only $1.00 off the cost of the plan.

Hi ascot

We had the free Disney Dining Plan for our trip at the end of August. We found it great - tips are definately included but watch out because if you order anything off plan (ie alcohol drinks or side orders) they will charge you an additional 18% for this too.

We ended up using all of our Table service credits and all of our snacks but had loads of counter service credits left. We also saw some appalling behaviour from other guests who on there last day were so determined not to go home with any credits that they were ordering 4 meal, 4 drinks and 4 desserts each and then just leaving it all on the tables - bizarre!

One bad thing about free disney dining time - it is almost impossible to get in any restaurants without pre booking 180 days before!

From what my agent has been led to understand, the gratuity change to the plan was motivated by 3 things:

1> Apparently service was suffering a bit, as servers knew they were getting 18% regardless.

2> As in the message above, people were wasting items, as it was no cost to them (basically a free tip to server which has to be paid out in full value cash).

3> Servers were intentionally pushing the highest dollar menu items, not necessarily the best choices for the diner (happened several times to us last time we went).

So I understand the gratuity part. Don't like it , but understand it (think they should have reduced the cost at least $3 or $4 a day).

As far as the appetizers, that's not a big issue for us, we tend to use the plat plan where they are still included (we like doing the tours). No clue why they removed them.
