Alligators and snakes you probably won't see. Fireants are everywhere. Not in the rooms, and not in the parks, but if you are out in a grassy area that is not manicured like Disney, it is possible. If you just look where you are walking, you should not have a problem. If bitten, best remedy is a paste made of meat tenderizer and water. Pat it on and let dry. (This also works for spiders) The ants will not seriously hurt you, but if you step into a big any hill you could be a bit uncomfortable.

All of the building of new homes, condo's, shopping malls, etc. has taken over the animals natural environments. There are alligators mainly in the swamp areas which is mostly the Everglades and the St. Johns River area. However alligators can also be found in lakes and golf course ponds and canals. The average tourist going to theme parks etc will never see one. Snakes tend to stay in wooded areas where they can find food. If you go on a nature hike just keep your eyes out for them. They are usually just as afraid of you as you are of them.

Fireants are everywhere. As previous poster stated the meat tenderized paste works well however if you don't have that rubbing alcohol or amonia works well. They also have a product called sting eeze which can be purchased at any drugstore and works for most bug bites as well as ant bites.

How to find and avoid fireants! They stay mostly just below ground and the entrance to their lair is a beige sandy pile from 6 inches to a foot across and piled up a bit, sometimes they are every few feet apart. Stay on sidewalks, lots, pavement etc and it won't be an issue.

They are slow moving. Tiny little fast ants are sugar ants, you may see in the condo, they do not bite. Also called grease ants. They just want your pudding.

Oh, then there's scorpions........

I have lived in Florida 35 years and have only been bitten by fireants once, when I stepped on top of a nest in an overgrown field. Please don't worry that this is in any way likely to happen to you on your holiday- the odds are very high against it. I think the most dangeous animal you are likely to encounter on your trip is the time share sales shark- they are hard to avoid.

I totally agree with being aware of the land sharks--much more dangerous than any of the other animals.
