car rental or WDW transport

We are going to WDW in September with 4 adults and 2 children, 10 & 13 years for 8 days. We are staying onsite at All Star Sports. We were thinking of hiring a car for a few days to go to SeaWorld and Kennedy Space Centre. Should we hire the car for the whole time we are there to get us around the different parks or is driving in WDW a nightmare? How good is the WDW transport system? How easy is it to go out of WDW to shop and have meals using public transport? We thought if we had the car for all the time we would have more flexibility to choose where to dine rather then disney all the time and it would be quicker to get to the parks.

We stay at Disney Resorts several times a year, never rent a car. The Disney Transportation System works qute well, IMHO. You will be dropped off right at the Gate to the Parks. This is very nice. If you do for whatever reason rent a car, don't drive to Magic Kingdom. You will have to Park at the Ticket and Transportation Center and then have to take the Monorail or the Ferry to get to the Gate. Taking The Disney Bus will by pass all that. There are 100s of places to eat at Disney World http://allears.net/menu/menus.htm and we find it would be more trouble and time than it's worth to go and eat outside of the Disney Area and to be honest, we rather not eat fast food or at chain restaurants so we aren't bothered

There are several options for going to Seaworld. Taxi and Shuttle by www.mearstransportation.com or Public Bus www.golynx.com

For a Trip to KSC a car may be ok for the day or you can use a tour company www.gatortours.com

A bit more detail on how to "escape" Disney using public buses. Clean, modern, reasonably frequent, and inexpensive. tripadvisor.com/Travel-g34515-c117796/Orland…

We stay at Disney every year and alwys hire a car. We do use the buses to the parks but like the flexibility of being able to pop out to the shops, other parks, restaurants etc.

If you are happy to be a POD (prisoner of Disney) lol, then you will be fine without a car, if you want to venture further afield I would recomend getting a car. The driving is very easy in Orlando:)

We would not go to Orlando without a car. You have so much more flexibility, able to go when and where you like without having to work round bus timetables etc. Make use of the transport system when visiting the parks within Disney. Personally I like to eat on International Drive and the 192, so much choice of eating places. Think you need to escape from Disney so this will give you this benefit.

Would consider renting a car for when you get stir crazy at WDW and want to re-enter the real world.

Public transport is a no go for us.
