Fun Things To Do That Don't Have a Long Wait

We'll be at Disney World during the Christmas holidays. We know that it will be very crowded, and we are planning to get to the parks early. Does anyone have suggestions for fun things to do when there are long lines for rides? Maybe the musical acts at Epcot, or the treks at Animal Kingdom, or rides that aren't so popular? Thanks!

We usually go down after Christmas and often spend some time in the Disney parks, and agree that it does get crowded.

There are strategies that some people use for those crowded days, including the following that work for us:

1. If you can take advantage of EMH, then do so, and go immediately to a popular ride or two. As soon as you can, get a fast pass to other popular rides. If you can't use EMH, then avoid the parks that are offering it for that day.

2. After the regular opening time, if you have some time before a fast pass time, fill in with some of the rides that move quickly. For example, Pirates in the MK is a good ride, but has a high capacity and often has shorter waits. You can plan ahead by looking at the wait times on a website and categorizing rides as very popular (e.g., Space Mountain) popular with less capacity (Peter Pan), popular with high capacity (Haunted Mansion), and not so popular (Peoplemovers). Undercover Tourist is one website that will give you an idea of the typical wait times and popularity of rides, not only at MK, but also at the other parks, so you can decide which ones are must-do for your interests, and which you should hit first thing before they get busy or fast passes are gone.

3. We usually time our meals at non-typical mealtimes when the rides are busiest, obtaining ADRs if you want something other than counter service. You can also try some popular rides during parades, or just after the afternoon parade, when many families seem to leave to give younger kids a nap.

4. Depending on your family interests, the World Showcase at EPCOT is a better spot to be in during crowded times when people are queueing at Soarin' or Test Track, assuming you got to those earlier. There ar the shops and exhibits, and many performers are outside, sometimes at the stage.

5. If you are at HS, stop by the Osbourne Lights after dark. Later in the evening is often a good time to try one of the popular rides that was busy earlier.

We were at MK last Monday, and it wasn't crowded. Pirates, Small World, and Haunted Mansion had no queues at all (just walked right on) but Peter Pan was still mobbed.

Just a few ideas we use. There are whole books written on "touring plans", and everyone who has been there a few time will have their own ideas, usually based on their specific interests -- and stamina. At that time of year, you will also need some patience.

PhotoTravels, Thanks for all the tips. I checked out the Undercover Tourist website, and that was very helpful. We're really looking forward to the Osborne Lights.
