Yes, May is moderate to heavily busy at Disney, so reservations are needed to ensure getting in. Many of the popular places are probably already booked solid for May since you can book 180 days in advance.

Outside of Disney locations, you won't need to worry about them.

Yes! If they run an offer for free dining, you may have problems if you don't have reservations. They are also nice to help you plan your day.Go to a park, have a lunch reservation there. Go back to the pool, freshen up , go to a park, eat dinner there & enjoy! We love it! I hate to wait to eat. We have watched tons of people be turned away at a variety of restaurants for no availabillity. I say reserve, if you can.

I would definitely reserve. We were there on almost exactly those dates last year. I'd made reservations but sometimes schedules got in the way -- when we missed a reservation and tried to find something available on short notice, pickings were usually slim. BTW, disney's mobile magic was a godsend in those situations -- it was the easiest way to find out which nearby restaurants had availability soon.

You need dining reservations at Disney table service restaurants whether they are offering "free dining" or not.

Tons of families "pay" for the dining plan just for the cost savings over "out of pocket" expense at times when "free dining" isn't offered and the number is great enough to require dining reservations all times of the year now.
