Things to do except theme parks

We are planning to stay in Orlando for 10 days or so. Any suggestions for things to do besides Theme parks? How long do you have to drive to go to a nice beach? Also, is it warm enough in October to go swimming?

The nearest beaches are on the east coast probably Cocoa and is an hours drive.

Remember this is the Atlantic so will be "cool". To be honest I like my water warm and always find the ocean cold no matter what time of year.

"How long do you have to drive to go to a nice beach?"

As David has said, about an hour to Cocoa Beach

"Also, is it warm enough in October to go swimming?"

Absolutely! In October, look for water temps in the low 80°F range on the east coast. Probably warmer on the Gulf coast..

Here are some non-park things to do:

I can also strongly recommend picking your own oranges at a farm.

We did so this January at : http://www.showcaseofcitrus.com/home/

That was a lot of fun, and if you haven´t tried eating an orange that comes straight from the tree, then you have missed something.

We spent a few hours here, great fun for all ages, and the navel oranges was out of this world.

The gulf beaches are only about 2 hours away, well worth te visit as well, an the gulf water is a lot warmer, we swam in February and it was real nice, we are however used to watertemps in the 17-18 C range.

Best beaches are Clearwater (gulf coast) an hour and three quarters drive from Kissimmee.

Best shopping in America and a lot of my time is taking up by being dragged around the premium outlets by my better half!

Airboat rides

Touring around Florida, Miami and the Keys

Swimming with Dolphins

Swimming with the Manatees in the Crystal River

You could go to Clearwater Beach for a day. It is around a 2 hr drive, or less, depending on traffic. The beach is lovely and there are plenty of nice restaurants etc. I would go on a weekday as parking on weekends can be difficult if you are not there very early.

We go in October every year and the weather is usually very hot, with very little rain and lovely for swimming. Just be aware that you may get a "cold front" for a day or two and take some clothes that you can layer up if it gets too chilly. We have needed to put jackets on in the evenings a few times.

What is there in Celebration? Just restaurants?

I've always wanted to check it out, but have yet to.

Integrity, there are shops and restaurants in Celebration and a nice lake to sit by.......and watch the aligators!! When we were there a few years ago we couldn't believe it when we spotted at least two baby gators in the lake. Bet they are quite a bit bigger now if they are still there??

Celebration is a lovely place, Good restaurants and cafes.

See http://celebrationtowncenter.com/events for up coming special events.

Also there is a weekly market.

Definitely a good alternative.

must agree with the Wekiwa Spring idea. the place is stunning. we got married last year and were told our guests to go there if they wanted a chilled day. it is quiet, stunning scenery, cheap canoe hire and lots of wildlife. natural sring for swimming and boardwalks going through the woodland. only a few $ entrance fee so a real cheap day out.

only takes about 25 mins from i drive and striaght forward to get to. you also drive past a few supermarkets once off the i4 so can stock up on drinks and snacks
