It depends.

If you have ever been arrested or convicted, you'll need a VISA instead so i;d apply now. If you just need an ESTA, and you won't be going back to the USA in 2014, then apply now. They last for 2 years, so you want it to last for 2 trips if there is a chance of 2.

If your passports will expire between now and the end of your trip in 2013 (ie you will need a new one before you go) then wait for your ESTA until you have your new PP as the ESTA will expire with the current passport so you don't want to waste $14 pp.

And do use the exact US .gov site- if anyone asks for more than $14 it won't be. Link in the sticky.

Hi again Mandy, i filled in our ESTA forms online today, though need to pay for them still with credit card, but they save the info for a week. Least its one more thing done + dusted

Here is my logic.

ESTA costs USD14 and is good for up to two years (assuming the passport is good for tht period). That's equal to about GBP9 per person. Or about GBP4.50 per year.. Or about 38p per month of its validity.

In other words, every month you delay applying for it is worth a theoretical maximum 38p saving to you. In fact, that materialises ONLY IF you intend to travel again close to the expiry date.

On the other hand, IF perchance your application is declined - not likely (unless you have any "dark secrets") but neverthleless - then there is the possibility you may have to change or cancel plans and there may be a non-recoverable cost involved - loss of deposit etc. Particularly if you have to apply for a visa as a result and have less than 6 months to go.

For 38p per month, my advice is to apply and obtain approval **BEFORE** you part with any non-refundable money as holiday deposit etc. Or otherwise, as soon as possible to minimise any possible losses - just in case.

Ditto Scan, we've all read what happens when an ESTA isn't granted so why wait and take the risk :-)
