Clearwater or Daytona Beach for long weekend?

We're looking to finish off our trip next May with a weekend at the beach. I've been to Clearwater before but I can't really remember what it was like. We left pretty much straight away as they had some freak disease in the Gulf and a load of very smelly dead fish were washing up on the beach.

I've been looking at Daytona as the hotels seem to be a fraction cheaper and it's half the distance of Clearwater. In your opinion which is better for a long weekend. It's a family holiday but we enjoy going out for food and a bar/pub afterwards for a drink...

Definately, Clearwater. I will stop there because I have done enough Daytona bashing.

I grew up where the beach meant summertime, waves (Atlantic Ocean), boardwalks, etc. In Florida, you have a choice of very different beach experiences. We choose the Atlantic, usually Cocoa Beach and surrounding areas, for day trips as they are the closest. We choose the Gulf for long weekends or a week vacation. Calm water, nice sand, seashells and sunsets.

The beach itself in Daytona is nice but I wouldnt want to stay in the town for the weekend. I cant remember anyone i know staying in Daytona or Cocoa for a weekend.

I would suggest Clearwater or any of the Pinellas County Beaches.

Here is a place to start researching:

There is pro's and con's to both.

I prefer Daytona. Clearwater is the more beautiful beaches, but Daytona area has more shopping and restaurant selection near the beaches without having to do so much driving around. Case in point: the new Joes Crab Shack on the pier. tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g34172-d32…

IMO , Daytona is ok for a day at the beach, but Clearwater , is my choice for a weekend trip, stay on the gulf mostly now on my vacation , enjoy your trip...

Another vote for Daytona here :-) but I love Clearwater too.

Daytona has had a bit of renovation in recent years as the pier is open and the boardwalk is all nice too.

I love daytona vs. clearwater. there's more to do. there may be some sections of daytona that are a bit run down, but overall its a lot of fun

I prefer Daytona as well. Clearwater is just too boring for me.

Hmm, I must admit I am swaying towards Daytona. It's closer and seems a little busier. I just don't wanna get it wrong as 8 of us will be going on my say so....
