When are you going, Nov?

If your son' has a new PP, he will need a new esta. They last 2 years OR the expiry of the passport used when you registered.

no he doesnt have an esta, what i meant was his passport expires june 2015, and we travel back november 2014. does the passport need to be valid for a longer period of time?

No, it just has to be valid for the entire journey.

However, an ESTA is good for 2 full years, but would expire with the passport. You could get his passport renewed early, and they would add on the unused months to it. This would mean you would not have to buy him another ESTA should you go to the USA after his current pp expires.

The passport needs to be valid for 6 months after the return date- I know this as I have had to get a new one! But given your dates you should be fine as it is over 6 months.

As regards the US and UK governments, the above is not true. For UK visitors to the USA, the passport has merely to be valid until the return date. I'm not claiming any inside knowledge of the policies adopted by any airlines or tour operators, but if any do have such a 6-month policy is NOT in line with the true legal position.

I agree, the 6 month guideline is for other countries and some airlines do use this guideline as a CYA. but it isn't required by the USA.

Check the official US response on the link below, UK passports do not require 6mths validity beyond your return date as are many many other countries passport holders also.
