In very general terms think of £1 to $1. What you pay a pound for will be about a dollar..

Groceries seem more expensive than in England but eating out will probably be good value.

If you think £1 to $1 you are going to be taking far too much and thinking everything is costly. You should get about $1.50 per £1.. (I assume you're in the UK Phil F)

Food - depends what sort of meal, ie 2 people for a sit down in Uno for example, including pint, glass of wine, desert for 2, you're looking at $60 all in (inc tip) so about £40 or £20 each... Drinks in a bar, can range from $7 for a pint right up for differnet types of alcaholic drinks.

Since it's your first time going to the US, you need to have a few things in place, such as ESTA, if you have not got this, get it now - https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ - this is required. Answer all questions honestly, and it costs $14 per person. EVERYBODY need one who are going.

Breakfast for 2 usually costs around $18 so £12 or £6 each (at the waffle house, thats for 2 x large waffles, with 2 sides, large oj. fills you right up for the day ahead. cheap as chips.

Talking of chips, bag of lays (walkers) will set you back $3.95 (£2.63) which is more expensive than UK.

As i said, if you have the conversion rate of 1.5 in your head, you can easily add it up from USD to GBP easy. (divide USD by 1.5 to get GBP)

Other things you might want to thinik about is if you're driving over there, to join the loyalty scheme for the hire company, so you do not have the hard sell (NEVER EVER EVER upgrade your car on their say, it's not needed, nor do you need the extra insurance, sunpass, or any other extra they try sell you) - thats like buying insurance to cover your insurance policy. Madness.

I think the Economist's Big Mac Index has the burger's US price pretty close to the UK.

Expect some very good prices for fast food, albeit not in the theme parks. Casual dining (with table service) can be good value. Orlando has plenty of both, including some relative newcomers like Chipotle (Mexican), Five Guys (burgers and fries; nothing else) and a Florida specialty, Pollo Tropical (rice, beans, chicken and more).

Orlando's hotel rates have been edging up; a TripAdvisor report (somewhere on the website) says Las Vegas is now considerably cheaper.

That said, the exchange rate has been attractive for a while for Americans thinking of visiting the UK.

Post 3 may have misunderstood the £1 to $1 point. You are likely to pay about a $ for things that cost £ in the UK, so about two thirds at current rates.

Remember that you will have to pay tax on the prices shown (around 7 %) and should tip wait and bar staff at around 15 to 20% (no need to start another tipping thread).

You're correct g0akc as I read it as the exchange rate is about the same $ for £.

We are taking $3000 for the pair of us for 14 days. Park tickets, villa and car hire all paid. Do you think this will be enough for meals and drinks? Thanks for all the advice
