Driving to Miami Port from Orlando on Labor Day?

we have a cruise booked 1st Sep 2014 which leaves port at 5pm. it is recomended to arrive 2 hours prior. we plan to drive down from Orlando on 1st and straight to the port. Ive read on her most people say its a 4 hour drive but how will that change seeing as its Labor Day? we are prepared to leave at 6am if needed or should i drive down the day before and stay in a cheap local hotel? help!!!

Driving down the day before is a good idea for many reasons, though not required. Traffic will be heavier on Monday afternoon as everyone heads home from the long weekend.

Get a hotel, lounge by the pool, go to the beach, ask for a late check-out and be relaxed.

It is probably a good idea to drive down the day before and stay in a hotel for the night.

I agree completely. Drive the day before. You are risking too much by driving the day of departure.

I disagree, the added expense in this case isnt really warranted. An early departure will get you to the Port in plenty of time to catch your ship. Start out on the Turnpike and then swtich to I-95 BEFORE you cross into Dade County.

You've posted the same question on the Miami board and the Orlando board. It seams the Miami board says go for it, while the Orlando board says go the day before. I make the trip on a regular basis from Ft Lauderdale and have never encountered anything more then a 30min. delay. From here its your call...

How will possible traffic accidents, weather-related delays, mechanical problems with your car (e.g. flat tire) factor in. Do unexpected events like these threaten your arrival time (before the ship departs)? It's a gamble.

As said, it's very doable that morning if you get started early enough. However, it's nice being able to take a leisurely drive the day before, and relax at a hotel. We did that down there last December, and made for a much more enjoyable vacation. Being able to sleep in and take your time getting around was really nice.
