Downtown vs. Sligtly out of Town?

We are planning a weekend in St. Augustine and, while I like nice inns, I don't really want to pay $250 a night (or more) for a room for Saturday night. We will arrive around noon on Saturday. walk around town in the afternoon and see some highlights and then go out to dinner. On Sunday, we will check out one or two more sights, possibly the Lightner Museum, and then head home. One night needed in a hotel or inn.

Question: if I stay outside the historic district, is it easy to just drive into the historic district and park? Or is there a shuttle into town from some hotels? Or should I just bite the bullet and pay more to be downtown in a picturesque B&B?

I am sure you can get a nice B&B for less than $250/night. Try here for an estimate: http://oldcityhouse.com/

Thanks for the recommendation. It was less expensive but totally booked. Any others you like?

Hello Jane,

Cozy Inn gets good reviews and is a great value. It's near the Old Town, but farther than most people would want to walk.

Take the Trolley Tour. There is a Trolley stop near Cozy Inn. They run every 20 minutes. Everyone should take the jTrolley Tour of Saint Augustine. And you can use the trolley for transportation for three days.

Have fun!

Not sure the price for your particular weekend, but we loved the Bayfront Westcott House. Great location, food, staff and stay. For what you will be spending on parking, trolley and a meal or two... it might add up to staying at a B&B-- IMHO.

We like the Edgewater Inn on the side of the Bridge of Lions opposite town. The rooms aren't fancy but the price is right, the beds comfortable and the rooms are clean. The best is sitting outside in the evening having a glass of wine or beer and watching the world go by. One of the best views of downtown St. Augustine.
