Ideas for St. Petersburg in mid-Feb 2011

A friend and I are thinking of going to Tampa, St. Petersburg, and/or Clearwater for the weekend of February 17-21, 2011.

First, does one need a car in that area or is public transit good enough to get around?

Neither of us are serious "beach" people, but are any of the beaches in the area good for a pretty walk and maybe dipping our toes in the water in mid-February? (We're northerners, so the water doesn't have to be 80 degrees.)

Are there any mangrove swamps or similar types of water-based wildlife parks nearby we can visit for half a day or a day?

What else would people recommend, such as museums, local historical sites, aquariums with local marine animals, etc.? (Places specializing in "local" history or art preferred, although I'm curious if the Dali museum is any good.) Is it worth walking around the downtown areas?

How about relaxed nightlife, such as music?

(Also, does this area get overrun with Spring Break folks at this time of year? If yes, how much of a difference would this make for people a bit past college age?)

Thanks so much in advance!

You will most likely need a car but if you are downtown St. Petersburg you can take the looper Trolley around downtown and also take the Beach Trolley to the Gulf side. The new Dali Museum is incredible. A much larger collection than the old one. There are numerous museums all within walking distance in downtown St. Petersburg: The Fine Arts Museum and The Chihuly along Beach Drive. There is plenty of nightlife as well in downtown. Music venues such as Janus Landing and other venues along Central Ave.

You would probably want to vist Ft. Desoto Park which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the States. Besides Ft Desoto there is also Weedon Island Preserve.

You will not see much Spring Breakers in downtown St. Petersburg, It is more popuar in Clearwater Beach
