We are travelling to Sanibel mid April and are hoping that there are no problems this spring with red tide or extreme seaweed infestation.
We love Sanibel....but
The last time we travelled to Sanibel it was the fall of 2005. There were two unfortunate things that prevented us from having our normally perfect time.
There was an unfortunate red tide bloom that had grown in the gulf and it moved ever so slightly, just off...sometimes touching the shoreline resulting in itchy eyes..and sore throat..and a breathing difficulties in Asthmatics..
A huge seaweed infestation bloomed just off shore of Sanibel's famous 10 mile beach. Local's blamed the fertilizers that leached into the inland waterways on the mainland that had poured into the gulf promoting major growth. Then the stuff washed ashore and from shore to about 20 feet out....a foot thick...this green and black mound rotted with dead fish and seabirds. This mass created a smell so bad that this Canadian ocean starved girl had to close the condo window during the day and evenings. We also had to travel almost to Captiva to enjoy the beach.
Any sign of these two menaces now?
We would love to know...
