Trip Report/ Shelling report PART 2

Trip Report / Shelling Report (PART 2)

Last night after the BBQ , Eclectichic , Her sister and I had all vowed to get up 1 1/2 hours before the -1.2 low tide and meet at Algiers Beach. Which means i wasn't going to get very much sleep agian!!! I know this lack of sleep is going to hit me like an avalanche any time now. but none the less i'm having too much fun and must push it a little more..........at least i thought until i woke up by alarm when i was supposed to, but i couldn't drag myself up, but i decided i should at least see what the shelling looks like from my balcony, still too dark to tell yet, but did see some flashlights down there. Suddenly, the combination of he cool morning air, the curiousity of what i might miss out on somehow possessed me to get up and head for Algiers. So i called her back to let her i WAS on my way, but she did not answer so i figured she was probably already there. Turns out she decided to sleep in too. but we did meet up an hour or two later.

**********Shelling Report************

JAN. 28 -1.2 low tide

Algiers beach

not as many shells (mass) as previous days, probably because the wind dropped off yesterday : (

*but I still found some really cool shells from Good to Great condition & a lot of miniatures ones also.

S/ Lightening Whelks-(small)

O/ True Tulip - great condition/nice size

O/ Lace Murex - great condition

A/ Tulips

S/ Olives

S/ Apple Murexes

S/ florida cones

O/ Paper Fig

O/ Pear Whelk

O/ really small Wenteltrap

O/ Alphabet Cone

**BONUS FIND** ( some extremely small miniature ones found later after first rinsing of shells. I Find these by swirling the sand in a circular motion in the bottom of my collecting /cleaning bucket with just a little bit of water in it and inspecting every small fleck of white the sand reveals.

----I'm sure this method is nothing new for you intermediate and advanced shellers but thought it may be helpful to someone who hasn't yet tried it.

Said goodbye to Ecletichic and went back to condo for a rest, then went to Bailey's Matthew's Musuem

Dinner at: MGT's. Ordered Lobster but didn't like it -too tough : [

MGT's gets a THUMBS DOWN from Me!!

_ Although i will state in their favor that they have a coupon for $5 off each adult entree in one of the islands coupon mags you can find in front of Jerry's Market. and that both of my parents enjoyed their shrimp and the service was good (except for the waitress never brought me my rum punch...........big no no. )

ok make that two thumbs down from me!!!!! LOL

-Ecletichic and i were trying to collaborate a 1/2 day trip to Cayo Costa Island but can't seem to find one that leaves as early as we want to and for only 1/2 day trip.

-got a text from Electichic before bedtime that she and her sis were scheduled to go out to Cayo Costa w/ Captiva Cruises at [8 am (?)].

well got up and made a lunch and got everything ready to go to Cayo Costa.

JAN 29

well of course now that it is a -1.2 low tide this morning and we finally found the right time to go to Cayo...............my lack of sleep finally caught up with me : ( and i canceled all and slept until 3pm. much needed!!!!

ZERO !!000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Unfortunately the Shelling fell off since the wind has been dead. but you can still find some decent ones at the beach, just not as many as after a storm or when the wind has been blowing. So i won't give anymore shelling reports on the rest of my trip since i mostly just found more of the same in the same places like my earlier shelling reports and nothing worth notable interest to report.

EXCEPT- ate at Doc Ford's and it was really good!!

And had the WHITE christmas cake at "the bubble room"- TO DIE FOR!!- on Captiva

******note to readers- As most of you probably know I am not listing all the shells that were present on the beach each day in my shelling reports, mostly just the ones that i collected. If there is a COMMON shell that is of particular interest to you and you would like to know if i viewed any at a particular beach or not, then send me a private message and i will look at my shell checklist for that beach and get back to you. Also if any of you would like more specifics such as the Scientific names or any other details that i have left out feel free to send me a private message. As writing this trip report is already taking too long to write already, since this is the second time i've typed it already after losing it once already b4 i was able to post it.

here is my beach list;

Middle Gulf Dr. (beginning)/Donax st - by Pelican's Roost Condos

Blind Pass

Turners beach

Middle Gulf Dr.( end) by sandollar condos

Algiers st.-(Gulfside City Park and beach access)

******Thanks to murexken for finding me the sandollars on kice island i was not able to find here on Sanibel or Captiva no matter how hard i tried. And for the King's Crowns i was too lazy to go find myself in the mud flats in the rain on my last day there. And for the valuable info you provided me and my family especially regarding Handicap accessibility options available around the island. and for showing us your beautiful condo .******** And to all reading this you should definitely look at the pics of their condo at At Sandollar condiminums website Condo # 201 because it was so much better than where we stayed. 1) better sized 2) better decorated in a perfect seashell theme modern with pretty blues and greens, 3) better pool location 4) better landscaping and amentitys, 5)the complex had elevators and was way better set up for wheelchair accessibility as well as scooter accessibility, i mean they really went the extra mile on accessibility with roll-in showers, ramps in and out of the screened in patio and at the entrance the unit, & my dad definitely liked how much easier it was to turn around and manuever in their condo compared to the one we rented. And it was only $100 more than ours was per week. 6) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY IT IS IN THE BEST SHELLING LOCATION on the island 7) I wouldn't have needed to rent a car or paid parking fees at Algiers beach cuz the condo was so close already 8) wouldn't of had to pack a lunch everyday to bring with since the condo is so close. ANYWAYS i have nothing to gain at all by telling you all this and in no way did anyone ask me to either. i would have loved to have someone tell me the same before we booked our condo, as i would have stayed at any available handicap accessible condo in that complex at least. but i wasn't as lucky.

FEB 2 -

bye bye Sanibel Island i will miss you!!

PS. I may have gone a bit shell crazy my first time there as it cost me $40 shipping to send all my seashells back to California and i plan on giving many away to friends and relatives and vow that next time i will be even more selective in my collecting.

Florida City- Feb 2-Feb 4

-went to everglades

- went to monkey jungle( expensive but worth going if you have never been before plan for about 2 1/2 - 3 hrs time for all the cool shows. cool birds too!!

-snorkeling trip to Key Largo- but condition sucked so bad even the fish were getting tossed around and sea sick.

* I saw a really big Sea biscuit when i was snorkeling. It was in the grassy flats right under the boat, but couldn't take it because we were in a protected marine sanctuary. : (~

Fort Lauderale ( FEB. 4 - FEB. 6 )

-Went to parks in area

-went to hard rock casino

lost $100 in blackjack but won $350 or so on a 2 penny slot machine!!!

Feb 6 - bye bye Florida

Cost info:

Airline : Virgin American

Round trip (LAX-FLL) $225

Customer Service before and during trip : Excellent

Car Rental Agency: Hertz ( Fort Myers Airport )

Rental Car : Cube (ugly but served its purpose)

Weekly Car Rental Rate Total (taxes and fees included) $ 191

Rental Condo : Pelican's Roost

weekly rate total (including taxes and fees): $2200

Great and interesting report! We usually have to ship our shells home too!

However, I don't think we have ever hit the $40. mark!

Thanks for the great report. You certainly found a lot of shells on Sanibel. The Florida Keys are also a very interesting place to collect seashells. However, you really need a boat to do so. The weather & water are usually much better in the late spring and summer, IMHO. Happy Shelling.
