Also where is a good place, we want beaches, shopping, clean nice place to stay. Doesn't have to be 5 star but nice and clean and pool, water, beaches! Thanks!! What about good day trips, we will be flying in but my have a rental car, not sure yet depends on trans. to and from airport. Also, where to fly into. So little time, sooooo many questions :)

Since you are new to the area and have so many questions, it might be easier if you will click on the "Frequently Asked Questions" on the Sanibel forum to the top right of this thread. You will find discussion and answers to many things, particularly "do you need a car" (the answer is yes) and what kind of accomodations would be best for you to things to see and do.

Sanibel is a very different type of beach spot and is not everyone's cup of tea, as well.

Then once you have a basic idea, come back and we'll help you with the specifics.

Here is an article that might help you:

You mentioned on another thread on the SW Gulf forum you wanted blue sea and white sandy beaches. Captiva fits that more than Sanibel. Sanibel has sand bars off the shore, with the right wind and wave action - the water isn't clear. It does stay shallow a long ways out. Captiva has beautiful beaches, clear water ( no sand bars) - has more of a caribbean island vibe to it, while Sanibel has more of a small town on an island feel. Sanibel is larger with more shopping and restaurants. It is only a 20 minute drive or so between the islands, a very nice drive with beautiful views.

Fly into RSW, definitely rent a car - check rental car momma, mousesavers, costco for deals. It would most likely cost you as much for a taxi, as it would to rent a car.

Would you all want to stay in the same place together? There are a few places on Sanibel for groups as large as yours, I can list them for you if you want. House rentals in Sanibel are 28 day period, but you can rent weekly in Captiva.

Day trips - you might not want any, the beaches are so interesting. Most people take cruises to the outer islands for lunch and site seeing, or shelling. Look at Captiva Cruises, Thriller, Adventures in Paradise.

Either island is fun - but they are different. Sanibel is 2/3's nature preserve, 20+ miles of biking, Ding Darling nature preserve, 3rd best shelling in the world ( we would argue 1st : ). Captiva has great beach houses, total island laid back feel, restaurants are walking distance to most homes, water sports available on the beach. You might want to check out the Captiva forum also, although the DE there, Bean3 does read this forum also.

Sanibel has more variety of shopping and also an extensive system of bike paths if these are relevent to your priorities.

We love Sanibel, I don't think you regret staying there. We recommend Loggerhead Cay and have had great luck on VRBO.com. We have rented #183 and the unit is very nice and the people are wonderful to work with. Take a look when you get a chance. Good luck, once you stay it will get into your blood and you will have to return.
