Can Sanibel be a day trip from Naples? How long a drive? What is the best beach for seashells? I've always wanted to do that.
Agree with Sax. Depending upon where you are staying in Naples and the traffic, it will probably be close to an hour drive. As for the best beach for seashells on Sanibel Island, that depends on many factors and may change from day to day. You may want to look at the FAQ on the top right of this page. Click on the "Which beach is the best for shelling?" and you can read a lot of good information concerning the beaches. Coming to Sanibel and walking the beach at low tide may be more important than which beach to visit. If you are coming in January-March, you may want to consider coming when the low tide is in the morning and have lunch at one of the restaurants. In the afternoon you can visit Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, http://www.fws.gov/dingdarling/ or enjoy the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, http://www.shellmuseum.org/ Both are fascinating places. One note of caution is appropriate. You will probably find that you will not be able to see/do everything that you may want to do in just one day. So, plan your day trip to Sanibel Island early during your time in Naples so that there is time to return, if you want to do so.
