September in southwest Florida is quiet almost everywhere. For great shelling I would look at Sanibel as well as Marco Island.

The vacation rentals button at the upper left side of this page will provide some prices and availability to help you compare the 2 areas.

We will be celebrating our anniversary on Sanibel Island in November. We are a few years further along than you. In September some restaurants will be closed, but many will still be open, more than enought. As for good shell collecting, that is so dependent upon the recent storms and winds. Having said that, I prefer the Middle Gulf Beaches, the stretch of beach from Casa Ybel up to Sundial and a little beyond. There are lots of tide pools and sandbars there, and many shells tend to get "caught" in the tide pools. In September there will be no crowds. The east end of the island tends to have more people than the middle or west ends, but in September, that really will not be a concern. You can drive your car or ride your bikes to all of the beaches. A small back pack will help you carry back all the shell treasures you find and will also be a good place to keep some water when you get thirsty. Enjoy your anniversary. You have picked a good place to visit.
