Best place to go off the island for a day trip

We were thinking of taking a day trip somewhere to explore more of Florida. Any good ideas? Naples? Marco Island?

If you've never been you can take the Key West Express out of Ft Meyers Beach for a day trip down to Key West.. It leaves around 9:00 in the morning and gets to Key West around noon. It leaves Key West for the return trip around 6:00 I think. Six hours isn't time to take in all of Key West but you have enough time to walk to southern most point, hit Mallory Square, do a little shopping and eat at one of the many great places they have down there. The boat has a bar and food although the prices are a little steep. I was surprised how much we enjoyed the trip down and back - we sat on the open top deck both ways.

Instead of driving, take Captiva Cruises out to Cabbage Key or Useppa Island.

I've been on the Key West Express. It is a nice trip, but I wanted to warn those who get seasick that the trip can be rough!

Another side trip is the Miromar Outlet Center in Estero, exit 123 off of I-75. Ladies, they have a Vera Bradley Outlet!!

What would be the main purpose of your trip, shopping / nature?

Naples has upscale shops as well as arty type goodies in Tin City.

http://www.tin-city.com/

Then you have Corkscrew swamp sanctuary http://corkscrew.audubon.org/ and Rookery bay http://www.rookerybay.org/ both are nearby.

Further afield Shark valley http://www.sharkvalleytramtours.com/

Alternatively visit Everglades city for airboats or conventional craft. + Smallwoods store http://smallwoodstore.com/

If you are interested in history you could visit Henry Ford and Thomas Edison's winter homes which are in Ft. Myers and now a single protected area:

Very interesting tour and the houses and grounds are beautiful. Well worth taking a ride over to the mainland to see.

We also did the Key West Express one day cruise. Definitely a fun day but will plan an overnight stay next time. Too much to see and do in 5-6 hour period. We also did a trip to Matlacha (Pine Island). That was a half day excursion. Loved the cute little artsy shops and ate at Bert's. Best fried shrimp ever!

We managed to go to Venice, Siesta Key, Longboat Key and Ana Marie Island, all in one day (Gone 12 hours total) It was a little rushed, but we were glad we did it. !

Just a lot of driving, walking and eating.

Venice - bought breakfast at a concession stand, and ate on the beach.

Siesta key - walked the beach and had a beer in the village.

Long boat key - did some window shopping at St. Armands (I think that's Long Boat Key.)

Anna Maria Island - lunch, don't remember the name, but it was a restaurant, right on the water (had tiki huts on the beach).

Also stopped in at rod and reel and watched the fisherman, wished i was hungry, would have loved a fresh fish sandwich.

On the way back, stopped at the village in Siesta Key and had a glass of wine and some oysters.

Oh I forgot, also stopped at Punta Gorda or maybe it was Port Charlotte, went to some kind of fisherman's wharf. (gosh I'm bad with names)

All the towns were very close together, except for the stretch between Sanibel and Venice. All in all, sand was the prettiest in Siesta Key, but my favorite was Anna Marie Island. This fall when we go back to Sanibel, hope to have time to go back and maybe spend a night. Would also like to see the beaches in Sarasota. Oh , so much to do , so little time (and money !)
