Clearwater beach is superb, as is Siesta Key at Sarasota.

Anna Maria Island would be quieter than either Clearwater or Siesta. It's know as a family kind of island, with a wonderful sense of Old Florida. There's a free trolley that runs up and down the island so you won't have to be driving everywhere you go ... although you'll still want a car to do some exploring of nearby places. Suggest you post a query on the Anna Maria Island forum for suggestions on places to consider and why the locals love it so much.

Another good option might be Lido Key which is just off of Longboat. That has the advantage of being very close to the wonderful Mote Aquarium which all would enjoy, as well as upmarket shops/restaurants on St. Armands and also the G-Wiz hands-opn science museum in downtown Sarasota.

did same type of trip in 2009 , Orlando followed by beach.

I would go to either Anna Maria Island ( can highly recommend Palm Tree Villas , see my review ) or Siesta Key. Both had amazing beaches. Anna Maria was perfect with small children, not too touristy and no high rise buildings.

Clearwater to AMI is an hour, plus or minus. Orlando to AMI is maybe two hours tops, depending on traffic and where you'd be in Orlando.

Lido Key at Sarsota in my opinion, a couple of hours drive from Orlando and much quieter than clearwater.
