Looking for EXPERT reply on Sarasota / Siesta Key area

Planning a trip with hubby to beach area around Sarasota/Siesta Key.

Ideally:

-a nice hotel on beach that isnt "kids stay free" since we're leaving our kids home

-shortest possible distance to Tampa airport

-vicinity with restaurants and shopping - we will have a rental car

-golf nearby

Your expert suggestions will be appreciated. We are open to other beaches between Indian Rocks down to Siesta Key.

Thank you.

Are you looking for a full service hotel? As most accomodations on siesta key tend to be rentals with either kitchenettes or full kitchens and living rooms.

Knowing when you are coming, and your budget per night/week would help.

If you want to be close enough to walk to a few things like shops and restaurants, base yourself in the Crescent beach area, or near (but not in )the Village. The village area will be a few minutes closer to TPA than crescent beach.

SRQ and others will help you choose the right location once you supply the information. In the mean time, one place I suggest for kid free accomdations (they only allow them in a few units) is Harrington House on Anna Maria Island.

If you want something "close" to TIA, then look further north. It will take you about 1 1/4 hours to the airport from Siesta Key.

Sarasota is a cultural town with great beaches on Siesta Key/Lido Key/Longboat Key. Many golf courses and things to do, since you will have a car.

When are you planning to visit? If it is during Spring Break (February, March part of April) kids/families are part of the landscape here. The price range is important to know for suggestions.

The Ritz Carlton in downtown Sarasota is upscale with the Founders Club Golf Course/spa and a private Beach Club on Lido Key...might be perfect for you.

The Longboat Key Club is also nice on Longboat Key (golf courses/spa).

You can post on the St. Pete and Clearwater forums too. Anna Maria Island doesn't have full service, large hotels if that is what you want..you don't specify.

The two places that came to mind are two that were already mentioned: Harrington House on Anna Maria (not a hotel but a wonderful and classy B&B with breakfast, and close to restaurants) and Longboat Key Club, a full-service resort that is close to shops and restaurants.

As others said, we need more info. The St Pete/Clearwater beaches are closer to Tamps, but a different vibe altogether. There are nice hotels, but it is kitschier in my opinion, with lots of actions touristy shops etc. Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Anna Maria Island are all sleepier places. Sure there are restaurants and clubs and stuff but it is quieter.

What is your price point? What do you want to do while here, other than golf? (Florida has lots of golf courses all over).

Do you like B & B type places, or brand hotels like the Ritz? Since you have a car, do you need to be within walking distance of restaurants and stuff?

We need more info…..

bobcrane--the reference to SRQ made earlier was to reference SRQgirl, a Sarasota tripadvisor expert who is very helpful and knowledgeable. And there are some nice hotels on Lido Key, right on the beach and across from the beach, as well as the other areas mentioned.

Your mention of families being part and parcel given time of year is noted! Thank you.

I got close to booking Harrington House but saw how small the TV was (13inch) and know my hubby would go nuts. I know, I know its vacation but he loves his ESPN. The Harrington set up is nice otherwise. The other (Lido resort)is booked April 17-20. We already have airfare into Tampa.

So - I feel like I am back to square one.

Between AMI to Siesta Key appears just a 20 minute difference so anywhere in that area works.

We are open to a fancier hotel to avoid the Kids-stay-free-crowd but hoped for $280/night max.

Beachfront is a must.

We'll have a car but hope to rent bikes to get around.

Any help will be appreciated.

Between AMI and Siesta Key is more like 45 minutes. At least. The keys are not all interconnected--you ahve to go to the mainland to go from key to key for many of the keys. You said the Lido resort is booked--did you mean Lido Beach Resort? Did you call them to check on availability? There are others too.

Have you looked at Colony club?

Hoping SRQgirl will chime in…

The Ritz is not on the beach, but has a nice beach club, and a golf course as well.

Also, have you posted on the AMI board, and on the Siesta Key board? Try that?
