Kid friendly fun in Jensen Beach and/or Stuart, FL

We are a family of 4, 2 adults, 2 boys - 11 and 8 yrs old who are looking for fun, free (or inexpensive) things to do in Jensen Beach (near Turtle Reef) or in Stuart in June 2013. Educational things, little field trips, great out of the way (inexpensive) restaurants, beaches, etc. would be great. We appreciate any tips you can give.

God bless you!

Oceanographic Center on the south end of the island should be fun for that age group. Every Thursday night they do Jammin' Jensen where Jensen Beach Blvd runs into Indian River Dr. The mulligan's there typically has some kids type attraction, though might be aimed at slightly younger kids depending on the schedule (for example, sponge bob dressed up and balloon animal people). Also in that area, there's a place to rent kayaks/canoes for a pretty reasonable price which would be fun as long as it's not too windy.

That's also a good time of year to walk the beach in the morning and see the sea turtle tracks from where they've come onto shore to lay eggs. If you don't see any tracks, go to any of the beaches that aren't in the middle of all the condos. Usually by around 8am, the rangers will have come by and marked the nests with flags. I recommend going before then so that the turtle tracks are fresh.

For breakfast, the kids would love Mulligan's, but the best food in town is Jans, across the street from Mulligan's. If your kids like to snorkel, Bathtub Beach is best for that. You will have to park at Surfers Beach just North of Bathtub. Walk down to Surfers Beach then walk South or to the right, l have found some GREAT shells many times in the past, after a storm is alwas great. Good luck and have fun. Hubie

let's see, there is the Loggerhead Marinelife Center down in Juno, a great day trip (about 20-25 minutes from Jensen). This is a rehab facility for Loggerhead Turtles, right on the Juno Beach with plenty of kid friendly activities. The beach there is beautiful. You could also visit the Jupiter Lighthouse and Museum while you are in that area. The Oceanographic Center in Stuart is nice too but does not have as much to offer as the Juno center. The Edison Museum is new and supposed to be very kid friendly, right on Hutchinson Island across from the Oceanographic Center at the entrance to the Stuart public beach. Alot of out-of-towners head over to Conchy Joe's for lunch or dinner, they have nightly entertainment (Reggae Band) which can be fun. Other than that as someone else posted there are kayak and SUP rentals in several areas and although the reef is dead at bathtub beach it is still a nice place to hang and find shells. Jensen is nice but you should bring them into Stuart and go downtown for lunch at the Pelican or Mulligans and ice cream at Kilwins. There is a nice riverwalk along the water and some kid friendly shops, a small playground and a small farmer's market on Sunday. Which reminds me, if you want fresh produce or veggies go to the produce stand on Indian River Drive in Jensen....lots to choose from but you must go early in the morning. There is also New England Fish Market on Jensen Beach blvd for fresh seafood if you are interested.

i made a mistake on the museum, i have been planning my own trip and confused the names. It's the Elliot museum on Hutchinson Island. We have had exceptional weather this past weekend, I hope it stays this way for your visit. Also, there is a cool beach towards the northern end of the island, it's Walton Rocks. Somewhat secluded, facilities for a picnic and restrooms. I highly recommend the short drive up there, it's rightbefore the power plant......don't let that deter you the beach there is really nice. Where are you staying?

Take the kids to Mulligan's in little downtown Jensen on Thursday night (Themed Family Nights). Very kid friendly and there is a little street fair on Thursdays beginning at 5:30 "Jammin Jensen". Duffy's Sports Grill in downtown Stuart has a good kids menu and is also very family friendly. Kids love the touch tanks at the Oceanographic Center as well as the other displays. Sea Turtle Beach is a nice beach with restrooms, showers and plenty of public parking. The causeway to the beach has nice picnic areas on the river and if you have access to a fishing pole that can be a fun activity for them! It would be helpful to know where you will be stayiing.

Just wanted to add the Family Fun Center/Golf World 6801 SE Kanner Highway. Lots of fun things for everyone to do. Batting Cages, go carts, games and mini golf. Great place for an evening of Family Fun.

Another idea is Lion Country Safari about 45 min South in West Palm Beach area. You can google it to see if it looks like a good fit for your Family. There is also a Pirate's Adventure boat trip to Peanut Island down in the Singer Island area also about a 45 min trip from Stuart. Again knowing the area you wil be staying in helps when recommending local restaurants.
